Chapter Six
Bridget and I decided we would introduce Rick to some people our age and make him some friends if that was even remotely possible, especially if he is as annoying to others as I find him to be. If we could not make him some friends at least I would get credit for trying to get him accustomed to his new home. I asked Reeky to come but he told us in a mix of Russian, Swedish and German that he would rather head to his room and work on something (a bomb possibly) before his roommate Breaker finished dinner and came back to their room and interrupted his work. Rick told him that it was really nice to meet him and Reeky shrugged and left.
"Does he seem weird to anyone but me?" Rick asked once he'd left.
"Yeah, but you know how it is. He's French and being a bit off is kind of their forte." I replied as I got up, Rick and Bridget following simultaneously. I looked around to see who was still left in the dining hall and was not surprised to see pretty much everyone still hanging around, and I didn't have to be a spy to know that it wasn't because they were still eating. All their plates were empty but they were all sticking around to see if they would be the ones I'd bring Rick to meet.
I wondered who to introduce him to since obviously there was no shortage in that department, everyone single person here would be happy to meet the new addition to our extended family. But I figured Rick would prefer to meet some people our age though there wasn't many 16-18 years olds at HQ at the moment since a lot of the older AITs have families and go home for summer break. Even Bridget just came back last week which was the same time I'd came back after spending a few weeks with her and her family at their summer home in Croatia.
Recruiting orphans and foster children is kind of a new thing for HQ actually. About ten years ago HQ used to be strictly for spies' children only but they made an exception to that rule when I came, seeing that not only operatives kids had potential in the spy biz, your average runaway does too. Anyways there are a few year rounders around our age aka me (when I'm not spending time with Bridget and her family in Croatia or someplace equally amazing) and about 10 others.
We all know each other here, I have mentioned how we're all pretty much one big extended family, so it wouldn't be strange if I just chose to sit down at a random table, but I had one in mind that wasn't quite so random. I knew exactly where to take Rick.
I led the way through the crowd of tables with all their occupants’ eyes trailing after us until we reached a table near the back and to the side of the room where six of the other best AITs (and friends) I know were sitting. I came up beside Hattie Williams one of the best field agents in training I know, besides myself that is. I know, I'm quite the modest person aren't I.
"Hey Jess. How are you?" she asked as I pulled up a chair and took a seat beside her motioning for Rick and Bridget to do the same. How would I describe Hattie Williams? Well Hattie is fairly similar to me actually, not in looks but we share the same kind of attitude and tend to think alike. She's really pretty in an intimidating way like she's daring you to tell her otherwise. Hattie has striking curly black hair that she most often choses to wear in a high ponytail at the back of her head because it was the easiest way to deal with it since it is basically unmanageable most of the time. She's thin and tall but appearances are most always deceiving because despite her form she is seriously quick and totally badass in hand to hand combat. It's almost scary sparring with her sometimes.
"I'm great, and guess who I've got trailing along with me? How would you like to meet our newest addition aka the guy whose handler I have to be for the week?" I said with fake cheer and a fake smile. Hattie raised her eyebrows.
