"An interview? I don't know." Adam argued with his manager. There was a moment of silence. "It's so close to Brook's birthday. I have a lot of planning and Christina wants me to tell her everything. I don't want her to hate me." It seemed as if Adam had no choice. "Fine." He hung up and ran a hand through his hair. "Brook!" Adam called into his room. "Daddy!" Brooklyn shouted excitedly. "I have an interview tomorrow. Do you wanna come? Or do you want me to ask Chrissy if she can baby-sit?" Adam knew that Christina was more then willing to baby-sit. "Interviews are boring." He laughed at Brooklyn's response. "I will text Chris then."
"Chrissy!" Brook ran to Christina when she walked through the door. "Thanks Christina." Adam kissed his daughter on the top of her head and left. "Can we watch Daddy's interview?" Brooklyn asked. "Since when do you wanna watch interviews?" Christina laughed. "I know but, I figured I would support him even though he doesn't know I'm watching."
"Are you ready Mr. Levine?" The make-up lady asked. "Sure." Adam answered as he went on stage for his live interview. "Your birthday is very soon so I have some birthday themed questions. What was the best birthday present you ever received?" Adam didn't need to think. "Almost five years ago my daughter was born a week before my birthday." The interviewer gave him a sly smile. "And who gave you that present. Without thinking Adam answered, "Christina Aguilera." Little did he know, Brooklyn was watching.
Both Brooklyn's and Christina's mouths hung open, both girls in shock. Christina was not expecting Adam to answer so boldly. Brook finally knew who her mother was and she was sitting right next to her. The girls looked at each other with the same facial expressions. Brooklyn's shock turned to anger. 'How could he keep this from me for so long? One of the most important things in my life. My best friend is my mother.' The thoughts and new news caused Brook to think about everything else that these two could be keeping from her. She ran up stairs, closing and locking her bedroom door.
Christina was not expecting any of this, for her daughter to react like this. For Adam to state it without thinking 'what if.' She watched as Brooklyn's facial expression changed quickly. Christina didn't know what to do. As far as she could tell, Brook was mad. How would she tell Adam? Why didn't he tell Brooklyn sooner? Questions that raced through her head. Christina sat on the couch, unmoving. 'What a great way to start of her relationship with her daughter.'
"The world just found out at the same time I did. The women that I called my best friend, the one down stairs is my mom." The four year old whispered to herself. 'What a great birthday present.' She though sarcastically. Brooklyn felt betrayed. Her own father, one of the only people she trusted, lied to her about something so important. Brook knew that Adam must of thought she wasn't watching so why would he tell the whole world but not her? She would find out from magazines and other people eventually.
Adam was caught up in the moment and happiness. This question caused him to remember the day his princess was born which filled Adam with adrenaline. It didn't help that he wanted to get this interview over with and go home to see his precious daughter. Everyone should have expected that answer, Christina was his girlfriend at the time and Adam Levine does not cheat. But Brooklyn, she didn't know they were together when she was born. 'Luckily she doesn't watch my interviews.'
Her dreams finally made sense. The mysterious lady. She was created based on the little memory Brook had of her mother. How could she not of realized the similarities of Christina and the mystery lady? Brooklyn waved aside the thought of her dreams which only brought her happiness and she was not in the mood to be happy.
The longer Christina sat in silence the sadder she became. Her worst fear had come true, her daughter hates her. "I shouldn't have left. I shouldn't have let Adam push me away." Christina thought of when Brook was born and only months later she left to go on tour. A tear had fallen down her check. And soon waterfalls were falling from her eyes. Christina hadn't even realized the interview was over until Adam walked through the front door looking happy.
Adam walked through the door and saw Christina, alone. Crying. He noticed the channel his interview was on played. "Chris? What happened?" Adam sat down next to his ex-girlfriend and wrapped a comforting arm around her. "She hates me. She hates us." Christina managed to stutter in between sniffles. "Where is she?" Adam seemed to know what was going on. Brooklyn had watched the interview. How could he let this happen? "Upstairs, in her room."
Brooklyn sat with her back against the bedroom door. She had no idea how much time had passed. Her anger mixed with sadness. Tears fell. Her thoughts were disrupted when there was a loud banging on her door. She knew it was her father but she didn't answer. "Brook!" She couldn't tell whether he was mad or upset. She stayed quiet. "Brooklyn!" This time he didn't use her nickname. "Brooklyn Levine!" She pulled away from the door but stayed on the ground. "Brooklyn Arianna Levine!" The use of her full name only made matters worse. She felt as if she did nothing wrong and questioned why her father used her full name. Brook's full name was only used when she was in trouble or when Adam was joking around and he did not sound like he was joking. "I didn't do anything wrong!" Brooklyn cried out, cuddling a stuffed bunny. The pounding had stopped. "Brook, please open the door." Her remark seemed to calm Adam down. "I know you didn't do anything wrong but we need to talk." Her father quietly stated. "I don't wanna talk."
Adam leaned his back against the door as he sat down. "Well you are talking now. But if you don't wanna talk then let me do the talking." He received no response. Christina made her way up the stairs. "Please babe. Let us in." Adam begged. The door opened and he fell backwards, hitting his head on the carpet of his daughter's room.
Brooklyn looked down at her father as he laid in the door way. She bit her lip to prevent herself from laughing. Brook wanted to make sure her father was okay but she had to stay mad. Brooklyn sat cross legged on the floor and her father sat across from her. Christina sat to her right.
Adam changed where he was sitting so he could sit next to Brook. He wrapped her in a tight hug, one in which she could not escape from. Adam sat his daughter on his lap and Christina moved to sit next to Adam. "Are you mad?" He asked the obvious question. Brooklyn only shook her head yes. "And you have every right to be." Christina added. "Brook, we are so sorry for not telling you. I didn't know if Christina would be staying and if she did leave to go on tour again then I didn't want you to feel hurt."
Christina began to feel as if this were her fault. If only she hadn't left on tour. "Are you lying about anything else?" Christina though for a second then looked at Adam who was doing the same. "Nope." They answered in unison.
"Why did you tell the whole world but not be about something so important?" Brooklyn began voicing the questions that had raced through her head earlier. This question was pointed more towards her father. "I wanted to get it over with and come home and see you. Plus I started thinking about the day you were born and it made me really happy, remembering when I had my two favorite girls together. It was the happiest day of my life." Adam's warm embrace caused the four year old to begin falling asleep but she fell asleep with a smile on her face.
Adam knew that his daughter had forgiven him but she will always have the small scar of betrayal and he will have to find a way to take it back. Once Adam had realized Brook fell asleep, he brought her to his room and fell asleep with her in his arms and Christina right beside him.
