Stargazing

Tonight, my high school class was taking a trip to go stargazing in the woods. I had always wanted to be able to view the stars in a place with nothing hampering the view, but every time I have tried it has always been ruined. I was hoping to get to hang out with my friends and watch the stars. I was also looking forward to talking with Daniel, who earlier in the week had asked if I wanted to hang out some point during the night. Daniel had always been one of the few guys I considered a friend, but just this past year I started crushing on him. He had never shown any interest in me, until he had asked me to hang out during the trip. When I had told my friends, they had gotten so excited. Maybe during this trip I would finally get my first kiss.

Everyone started arriving around 7:00, so we would have enough time to set up the red lights and blankets and any other things we had brought. I walked past a few kids setting up telescopes, and waved as I saw one of my best friends flipping through a bookmarking different maps in her astronomy books. I found myself a little spot farther down the hill, so I was away from everyone else. By 7:30 everyone was there. Someone had set up a radio, which I could hear mixed in with the comforting noise of crickets chirping. I laid down on the blanket I had set up, watching the sky as the colors changed with the sunset. By 8:15 it was completely dark and the stars were starting to shine.

I took n the beauty of all the twinkles that were shining down on me. I was worried I was too far away that Daniel wouldn't find me. I choose a star, the first one my eyes landed on and made a wish that he hadn't stood me up. I stared at the stars, trying to find a constellation when Daniel's face blocked the view. Even with only the stars and the little bit of glow from the red lights that were there, it lit up his face enough to send flutters throughout my body. He smiled and laid down next to me. He turned on his side, so he was facing me. I turned to look at him.

"I hope you're not mad I'm late. I had a difficult time getting here, and by the time I did I couldn't find you," he whispered. The feel of his breath on my face made me shiver with excitement. He must have thought I was cold, because he took one of the extra blankets I brought and laid it over me.

"It's okay. I was just hoping you hadn't stood me up," I answered, sheepishly. He smiled as if in a way to say he would never. I turned back on his back, but I took this as my chance to cuddle up next to him. He didn't seem to care, and wrapped one of his arms under me. We just watched the stars in a peaceful silence. I could feel his fingers playing with a piece of my hair. I could feel how much I wanted to kiss him, how much I wanted him to kiss me, but I was instantly filled with dread. What if I was never meant to have someone like me. I shivered, pulling myself into a sitting position so Daniel wouldn't touch me. He sat up, and he started rubbing his fingers across my back. He took my chin and turned my face to look at him. I started leaning into him, as if out of instinct. He leaned towards me, cupping my face as if he were going to kiss me. I stopped myself, pulling myself away from his warmth.

"Are you okay? I'm sorry, I just thought that's what you wanted. But if you want me to stop, I can stop," he offered. I turned to look at him, my heart pulling me towards him.

"I've never been kissed before," I blurted, shamefully. I'm glad there was already red light otherwise he could see how much I was blushing. I stared at his eyes, drinking in the tenderness.

"What's stopping you now?" he asked.

"I guess I've just always dreamed about what my first kiss would be like, but what if it's not everything I thought it would be. I've just waited so long for this and I don't know if I'm ready," I answered.

"Lacey Raven, I promise to you I will make this your best first kiss," he promised.

And he did.
