When Piero stepped into Denver University Hospital a few days later, he found controlled chaos. Nurses and doctors walked the halls, some with patients in wheelchairs heading into the E.R, others alone, and others rushing to where they were needed. He smiled to himself. He was intent on learning as much as he could in his time here.
"You must be Doctor Accardi?" A man in a white lab coat walking up to Piero. He nodded and smiled warmly at the man.
"I'm Doctor Henderson, the owner and manager of this hospital." They shook hands and exchanged grins. "Let me show you around."
They walked down the halls at a slow pace as Doctor Henderson showed Piero all the different wings in the hospital. "You will be working with our lead Surgeon, Doctor Marquez." Mister Henderson informed leading Piero down a narrow hallway behind the Cardiac wing.
"You will be required to stay here for most of the time, so we have a living area for the nurses and doctors. Let me show you your room." They turned down another hall. The sign above the double doors read: "Living Wing." There were multiple doors on either side of the hall, all a pale shade of Cream. They continued to walk until they came to the third to last door on the left. Doctor Henderson opened the door and let Piero in.
"This is you. Your roommate should be in there too." He gestured inside. "Oh, and welcome, Doctor Accardi." He smiled before closing the door and heading back to his office.
Piero took in the spacious room with two beds on either side. A large bookshelf adorned the wall adjacent to the door and a beautiful nature portrait hung over his bed. He turned to see his roommate smiling at him.
"Hello," The man greeted. "I'm Doctor Pablo Gomez."
"Piero Accardi," He offered his hand for the man to shake, and he did.
"Italian, I presume?" He asked still smiling.
Piero nodded giving a small smile.
"Well, I'm going to go try and find Doctor Marquez. I'm suppose to work with him." Piero said dropping his bag on the floor next to his bed.
"I'll go with you. I can introduce you to the others and show you around." Pablo offered putting on his lab coat.
"Let's go then."
They walked down a brightly lit hall, Pablo introducing him to all the other Doctors and nurses that passed by.
"And this is Nayelli." Pablo said as they walked up to a nurse. She turned and smiled sweetly. Piero's breath hitched in his throat. She was beautiful. Her long, curly, brown hair cascaded down her back in soft waves. Her eyes sparkled in the light and were a beautiful shade of chocolate brown. Her skin was fair and pale and her small pink lips looked soft to the touch. She was mesmerizing.
"Nayelli, this is Doctor Accardi. He'll be working with Doctor Marquez." Pablo introduced.
"Hi, nice to meet you." She smiled warmly. Piero couldn't speak, his mouth was dry and he felt nervous.
"Nurse Nayelli please report to Radiology. Nurse Nayelli please report to Radiology." The loudspeaker rang out through the hospital.
"I have to go. It was great to meet you." Nayelli smiled before running off in the direction they had just come from.
"She's beautiful." Piero breathed watching her go.
Pablo chuckled. "Yea, she's Doctor Marquez's right hand. He doesn't like people messing with her." They continued walking and eventually they came to Doctor Marquez's office.
They reached the door just in time to find him leaving. He had just been called to check a patient.
"Doctor Marquez, this is Doctor Accardi. He's your student for the next few months." Pablo said.
Doctor Marquez looked over Piero and rolled his eyes.
"I don't have time for games or interruptions, so follow me and try to learn as much as you can." He spoke walking away from them. Piero glanced at Pablo who shrugged.
Piero ran and caught up to him, keeping stride.
"We're going to do a check up to a forty-year-old man who believes he has cancer because of stomach cramps. Take notes and stay out of my way." He ordered. They stepped into a room where a man was laying on a bed, his hand rested on his stomach.
"Hello Mister Curtis, let's check and see what the problem is." Doctor Marquez said standing next to the bed. He made the patient sit, checking his temperature and checking his vitals while asking a few questions.
"When was the last time you had a bowel movement mister Curtis?" Doctor Marquez asked while pressing Curtis's stomach lightly.
"Uh, about a week ago. But what does shit have to do with my cancer?" Curtis asked grimacing when the doctor pressed on a certain spot on his lower belly.
"It's not cancer sir, your stomach is just having trouble releaving itself from all the food you have eaten in this past week. You might just need to go to the bathroom." Piero spoke from his place on the other side of the bed.
Doctor Marquez glared at him. How dare him interrupt. he was here to learn and be a student, that's all.
"So, I just need to shit?" Curtis asked, curiosity playing in his eyes.
Piero smiled and nodded.
"I'm going to prescribe you some vitamins and some light laxatives to help with the bowel movements." Doctor Marquez announced ripping out a paper from his notepad and handing it to Curtis.
"Thank you." Curtis smiled at Piero then at Doctor Marquez.
