Getting of the bus and walking to the dumpster was a 2 mile walk. My usual routine was to go down Arlington avenue and pass by the gas station for a snack but I decided to go down cherry street. It was a shortcut to the dumpster which was behind an old Kmart. I heard stories that it shut down because there was a mysterious shooting in the store years ago. Here in the Boston streets your never safe. I was half way down cherry when all of a sudden a red and black car pulled up next to me. I kept walking my head held high proud and strong.
Then I heard a voice I’ll never forget it said “little girl are you lost?”
I shook my head and continued walking.
He said “I can take you anywhere you need to go”.
I just kept walking my parents always told me never to trust people you don’t know. I calmly took short breaths. Then he stopped the car and got out and came up behind me and grabbed me. My heart stopped and shiver went down my spine he turned me a around that was the first time I ever seen his face. He was a short brown man with a dark heavy mustache and black glasses.
He said “you’re coming with me”.
I pushed off and he grabbed a harder grip. I struggled to push off as he walked to the car with me in a choked up position. I bit his four and kicked his leg in then I made a run while I looked back and saw him cursing at me and covering the blood on his arm. He covered his wounded arm and got in his car. I raced as fast as I could down the street to Mr. Clark.
When I finally reached the store I belted in and called for Mr. Clark. The wounded man ran into the store behind me…
I hid behind Mr. Clark shaking …
Mr. Clark Boldly spoke up “how may I assist you sir”?
The man was quick to response “That’s my daughter she’s crazy in the head “.
Mr. Clark laughed then looked at me then laughed again. Then the man laughed with him…
Mr. Clark then said something that touched my heart he said “you're crazy sir this is my daughter and if you so happen to lay a finger on her … then he paused and lifted up his tux and tucked in his pants was a pistol.
He smiled and said “now get out of my store you nasty wanted rapist”
The man looked deep into my eyes and back at Mr. Clark then backed away slowly ….. got in his car and drove away. Mr. Clark looked at me and I looked at him .. overwhelmed with thankfulness I embraced him.
“Thank you Mr. Clark “ I said in a whisper.
He whispered back “Anytime sweetheart”.
Mr. Clark gave me five dollars for dinner. That was like fifty bucks in my eyes. Five dollars bought me soda and a burger. Finally some hot food, I haven’t had a hot dinner in five weeks. Last night I found steak in the trash ..cold and stale but it was better than nothing. I’m thankful for everything God gives me. After going to McDonalds and eating peacefully I headed back to my dumpster. I finally arrived at the dumpster and fell to my knees crawling into a small door I made. I turned on my solar powered light bulb and got myself comfortable under my blanket .I turned off the lights and stared into the pitch black atmosphere around me .. I slowly closed my eyes. Wishing my life was a dream … Then I fell asleep.
