Four Years Later

"You're kidding, right?"

Jess laughed and shook her head. "Not a bit. This guy is just crazy freaking good!"

Sam blushed. "It's not a big deal."

Myles gaped. "Not a big deal? Dude, this is possibly the biggest deal since...since...hell, ever, man!"

Josie nodded. "He's right. That's amazing, Sam!"

Jess looked over at her boyfriend, teeming with admiration, then laced her fingers with his. "They are a hundred percent right, Sam," she declared.

"Thanks, guys," Sam said. "I mean it. But...let's talk about something else."

"Don't be so humble!" Myles said. He stood up and called to everyone in the bar, "Hey! Yo! This guy? One-seventy-four! LSAT! Hella!" Applause rang throughout the bar, although Josie doubted anyone knew what anyone else was clapping about. Most of these people were too drunk to walk straight. She pulled Myles back down and kissed him.

This was her life now. No ghosts. No monsters. No father. She had Sam and Jess, and Myles. She had school. She had work. It was more normal than anyone could've asked for.

"Seriously, dude, that's amazing," Myles said. "I mean, you can basically go to whatever law school what now."

Sam grinned shyly. "Um, actually, I think I want to go here, Stanford. I wasn't going to tell you guys, but...I've got an interview on Monday."

Another round of cheers rang throughout the bar.

Josie tossed a piece of her long brown hair over her shoulder.

"Okay," she said. "Next round's on me. Tonight we celebrate Sam!"

She stood up to walk over to the bar, but Myles grabbed her wrist.

"Actually, there's something else we should celebrate," he said. He dropped to one knee and reached into his back pocket. He pulled out a small blue box, and opened it to reveal a gold ring with a glittering turquoise gem in it.

"Josie Moss," he began. "I love you. Will you marry me?"

Josie threw her arms around him.

"Of course!" she cried.

More applause than ever rang throughout the bar, initiated by Sam and Jess. They whooped and cheered, their voices overpowering everyone else in the room.

Josie and Myles kissed, as a man with a Polaroid camera passed by.

"Want your picture?" he asked the group.

"Definitely," Jess said. "Josie, Myles, get in here!" She yanked them into the picture, and Josie situated her head beside Jess's. Myles wrapped his arms around her and rested his chin on her head. Sam and Jess held hands, tilting their heads slightly towards each other.

"Smile!" Jess said as the camera went off. Josie put on her widest grin, and knew it was a hundred percent genuine.

The guy printed out the picture, then handed it to Sam.

"Thanks," Sam called.

Josie examined the photo, and couldn't help but smile again. They were all so candidly happy, so in love with life and each other. It was perfect.

"Best Halloween ever," Jess declared.
