Kind Of Okay

"Remind me why she's coming along?" Dean said. He was in the driver's seat of the Impala, foot pressed against the floor as the vehicle sped down the highway.

"She's a hunter, Dean," Sam said. "She can help."

"Yeah, I'm a hunter," Josie agreed. "I can help."

They passed a sign that read Lake Manitoc: 5 miles.

"We don't need any help," Dean said.

Josie narrowed her eyes. "I don't care what you need. Or don't need."

"How do I even know you can really hunt?" Dean pressed. "Which metal kills ghosts--silver or gold?"

Josie rolled her eyes. "Trick question, dumbass, it's iron. And it doesn't kill them, it dissipates their manifested form."

"Ooh, she can use big, fancy words," Dean taunted.

"And gank ghosts, apparently," Sam added.

Josie grinned. "Salt and burn the bones."

"But can she actually do it?" Dean snapped.

"Can a dog..." Josie trailed off. "Can a dog...damn, I was gonna think of a good analogy. The moment's gone."

Josie leaned forward on the edge of the backseat, and poked her head between the boys.

"What kind of case are we working anyway?" she asked.

"Drownings," Sam reported.

Josie made a face. "Doesn't sound very case-worthy to me."

"Would it sound case-worthy if there were five in the past two weeks?" Sam asked.

Josie cocked an eyebrow.

"Perhaps."

"Sucks for you," Dean said, "because you're not helping."

"Excuse me?" Josie demanded. "I most certainly am helping, actually."

Sam swallowed.

"Actually, Jose," Sam started timidly, "you should sit this out."

Josie gaped. "What? No freaking way! You said I could help!"

"I said you could come," Sam corrected. "I said nothing about helping. You can't just jump back into hunting, Jose."

"Didn't you, like, a week ago?"

"That's different."

"Not very." Josie crossed her arms.

Dean parked the car on the side of the road.

"Stay here," he told Josie, stepping out of the car.

"It'll be a quick, we're just going to talk to the sheriff," Sam added.

Josie stayed up, watching them walk inside a small building that she guessed was the police department. When she was sure they were gone, she climbed out of the car.

"Like hell I'll stay here," she muttered.

She hurried over to a convenience store across the street, spotting a newspaper rack outside. If these drownings were that serious, they'd be in there.

Sure enough, they made the front page.

Josie's eyes darted over the column.

"High school senior drowns in lake--fifth victim in two weeks.
