“Tomo-chan, what are you doing?”
“Grandma. Suki-pi died.” I held out my dead pet hamster to my grandma and she looked at it. My face was tear-stricken and I can’t stop from crying.
“Grandma, it’s so sad.” I said to her and then she hugged me. “There, there. I’m here Tomo-chan.” I hugged her back and cried my eyes out. After awhile, she patted my head and took my pet hamster from my hands.
“Tomo-chan, shouldn’t we bury him for now?” My grandma said and I just nodded my head. We went to the backyard and she dug a hole, big and deep enough for Suki. She placed him there buried him.
“Tomo-chan, any words for Suki-pi?” She asked me gently and again, I only nodded my head.
“S-Suki-pi..I love you so much and that I w-want you to know that you’re the best pet I ever had. I hope you’ll be in a good place now.” My grandma held my shoulder and together we prayed for the soul of my pet.
“Grandma, why did I need to lose him?”
She then held my face and looked directly at my eyes. “You didn’t lose him Tomo-chan.” I didn’t reply and looked at her in confusion.
“Did you enjoy his company when he was here?” She asked. “Yes. Very much.” I only said. “Do you remember the happy times with him?” She added. “I do.”
“You know, what we have enjoyed, we will never lose. All of it, all that we love deeply becomes a part of us. He will live in your mind and in your heart, through your memories.” She pointed at my head and heart, trying to explain to me the importance of my memories of Suki. I smiled a little showing to her that I understand. Then I asked her, “Will you also remember him for me grandma?”
She managed to smile to me and…..
BANG!
“OUCH! W-what the…HUH?”
I rubbed my head and looked around my room. I was lying on the floor, apparently I’ve fallen off my bed. I stood up and rubbed my eyes dry before thinking about what I’ve just dreamed.
“Haa, a weird dream.” I only said. That dream actually happened when I was 7 years old. Why would I dream about my dead pet now? I thought to myself but shrugged the idea.
“Hey, Tomo-chan. I’ve heard something fell down. Is that you again?” My mom burst out of my door, shocking me in the process.
“MOM! Knock first!”
“Oh, I thought I did hehe. Well anyway, get dress already, you’ll be late.” She smiled at me and walk out of my room like nothing happened.
“Geez.” I fixed my bed, have a bath and brushed my teeth and went downstairs after I get dressed. I only ate a piece of bread and headed for the door.
“I’m going mom!” I called out to her. I was at the door when she suddenly called out again.
“Wait Tomo! Did you bring your toothbrush?”
“Yes!”
“Your towel?”
“Already in the bag.”
“Your cellphone? Did you bring it?”
“I did. Don’t worry mom, I’ll call you when I get there.”
“How about your extra clothes?” I wonder how long will she continue. “Yes mom, we’ve been through this every week.” A hint of impatience is heard in my voice.
“Then how about your undi-“
“MOM! The neighbors can hear you!” I bellowed before my mother could continue what she was about to say. Somehow, she likes teasing me and this made my face flushed from embarrassment.
