Mahiru

My life is pretty simple at this point in time. School isn't troublesome and it's nice and quiet at home.

But surprises do happen once in a while. On my way to school I found a stray cat in an alley. It's annoying to regret things later on, so I decided to take him home.

I named the black cat Kuro.

Though that wasn't the only surprise of the day. Once I arrived at school there was a stillness in our classroom as the teacher spoke.

"Today we have a transfer student. Please welcome them and show them around when you have the chance." She announces opening the door.

A girl walked in with dark brown hair and piercing red eyes.

"Please introduce yourself." The teacher instructed the girl. She faced the class with a strange expression. One I hadn't seen since that day.

"My name is Yukina Maki. Nice to meet you all." She uttered. Her eyes never left the floor.

"Very well. Please take a seat and we will start our lesson for today." The teacher smiled. Yukina made her way to the back of the classroom and stared out the window for the entire time.

I could tell that something was bothering her, but getting too involved could cause trouble.

"You seem to be taking a liking to the new girl Mahiru." Sakuya teased. I rolled my eyes and grabbed my bag.

"It's nothing like that." I grumbled walking towards the door.

"Wait for us!" My friends yelled from behind me. As I stepped into the hallway I glanced back one final time at Yukina. Surprisingly she happened to also be looking at me.

Once our eyes met we instinctively looked away uncomfortably.

"So who do you think she is? She showed up in the middle of the year and never said where she transfered from." Ryusei mumbled glancing down at his phone.

"Who knows. It's a bother to dig into her past if she isn't willing to share it." I stated.

"Words of wisdom from a hypocrite." A soft voice spat. Yukina passed by us with a strange sort of authority in her step. She wasn't annoyed, hostile, or even showing any emotion.

She just seemed... accustomed to this place already.
