Daniel slowly opens his eyes. There’s a bright white light shining his face. He raises his hands and finds them covered in bandages.

Where am I? And why am I still alive?

As he looks around the room, he sees the faces of his two friends. Jamie and Sally are smiling. They have tears in their eyes. They look relieved, as if a giant weight has just been lifted of their shoulders. They also look worried, as if the weight could be placed there again.

“Hey buddy! How are you feeling?” asks Jamie

“What happened? Where am I? Uh, what is going on?” replies Daniel.

With a worried look on her face, but determination in her eyes, Sally tries to explain what happened

“Your neighbors heard screams coming from your house, so they called the police. They found you, laying unconscious in the floor of your room. There was blood everywhere.

They quickly took you to the hospital and the doctors treated your wounds. Luckily, they say, the police got to you just in time… or you would be dead.” She says with a sob “Oh please don’t ever do that again! We know you’re bullied and that life isn’t always easy but that’s why we’re here for you! Oh Daniel, please don’t leave us again! When I saw you there unconscious, almost dead, I couldn’t take it. You’re my best friend. I need you! Oh please don’t ever do that again! Please Daniel, don’t leave us.” She’s bawling now, and the ending comes out in a rush. Jamie is hugging her, trying to console her.

“I… I’m sorry.” Where the only words that the cursed child could speak.

And that is when Daniel realized that maybe there was a way out. Maybe, just maybe, there was a reason to live, a reason to fight. These two people, these two friends, where worth living for.

After two weeks of recuperation, Daniel is back in school. It’s still not easy, much less fun, but he has people to share the horrible consequences of the curse with.

He is walking the hallways with his two friends, when he sees the monsters.

“Gay!”

“Homo!”

“Fag!”

The monsters screamed. The monsters bullied. The monsters laughed.

But Daniel, finally with enough bravery, looks directly into their eyes and smiles. He smiles because there is a reason to ignore them. There is a reason to feel mercy. At last, there is a reason to live with the curse.

His dreams have found peace and joy. The creature hasn’t appeared since that horrible night.

Maybe he finally destroyed it.

Maybe he found a way to escape.

Or maybe… it’s just waiting for the right time to come back.
