Sanji and I took our time making our way back to the castle as it got dark but just as the morning star, the sun started to set we picked up our pace a little. I was a warrior but I was also wise and knew that some hours of the night were not meant to be outside during. That's when all the monsters started to lurk and got hungry after their day of slumber.
A lot of the night creatures wandered in packs and were much larger than Sanji. She was the main reason we were heading back right now. I couldn't lose her. She was close to the only family I had growing up. Fae animals were immortal as long as they stayed in this land, on this side of the wall, but normal things could end them in the blink of an eye. And that I could not afford.
There was a bustle in the stables ahead as the flaming lanterns lit the pathway to the inconceivably large stable built with the darkest wood and the loveliest stones. The stable held over 100 stalls filled with Fae riding mounts. Bonded Steeds were what we called them. Every Fae had at least one. The stable was massive in size towering a good thirty feet overhead as we returned and Sanji's stall. Her stall was twenty foot by twenty foot in size and it was made from a felled tree of lights, the wood sparkled lightly in the dim faelights that hung in the middle aisle and stone-framed the wood elegantly.
She had new green hay and a patch of grass that was magicked, so it grew back as fast as she ate it. Her water pail was full of the clearest water and her stall was filled with straw for her to lay on. She walked into her open footed stall and gave me a warning look and snorted. She was making sure to confirm what our plan was for the wolf and I nodded. It was too risky to even whisper there were ears everywhere waiting to gossip about it. With that, she laid down for rest and I said my goodbyes and headed to the castle.
"A fool's errand she was sent on Dessa unless she was ordered to, she was an omega. But they must be watching the wall activity because that spot has been unprotected and unguarded for years."
Walking to my chambers was definitely unnerving. Trying to make sense of the she-wolf, I lost myself in my thoughts and didn't notice The Queen until I bumped into her.
"You're finally back Iridessa. Where did you and the Prince of The Winter Court wander to?" She gave me a menacing snarl and lifted her eyebrow.
"None of your business Queen." She as being nosy as always. "Ask one of the guards you have posted everywhere."
I brushed past her and she snagged my arm with her clawed hand. "You little twerp. Do you want to go back in the pit?" Her eyes changed to a deep gold and her canines lengthened. "You pulled some extreme offenses today in the room where one of your betrothed would be. Don't forget I can level that little town of yours in a heartbeat."
I grinned my own canines lengthening at her open threat, daring her. "Means I successfully scared them away then, if you so much as lift a SINGLE guards sword or torch to anything or anyone in Skye I will level the guards quarters and hunt down every last one of your dark seekers in return. You and I both know I will be true to my word"
My mother backhanded me. I'm sure the whole kingdom heard that one, or at least the cracking as my jaw broke. "Learn your place pup. You will never be Queen. I'll make sure of it. If you keep making threats like that I'll have to end you and try again with another child." She snapped her fingers and was gone.
