Long ago, two races lived in this world: HUMANS and MONSTERS.
You had read this story so many times before. It was almost like clockwork, the way you could recite the words.
One day, war broke out between the two races. Victorious, the humans sealed the monsters underground with a powerful spell.
You glance out of your window. There it is, lit by the moon, Mount Ebott.
It is said that those who climb the mountain never return.
You can hear soft snoring in the other rooms of your house. Everything is sleeping. The world is turning, life continues, even without you. You set the book down and get up slowly to walk to the window, a path that you've memorized to avoid the creakier floorboards.
It is said that those who climb the mountain never return.
You stare at the landscape. Snow sparkles at the top of the mountain, and as you peer closer, you swear you can see the mouth of a cave, with something sparkling inside.
You make your way downstairs.
It is said that those who climb the mountain never return.
You grab a pair of boots, a coat, and some mittens that you put in a pocket. The door closes with a click behind you.
It is said that those who climb the mountain never return.
You start to walk. The path is familiar from your days spent playing on the hillside. It gets steeper, colder, unfamiliar, as you rise.
It is said that those who climb the mountain never return.
You reach an outcropping, a flat platform at the mouth of the cave. You take one step, then another, and another, until you're inside. Nothing is twinkling. Darkness fills the space around you.
It is said that those who climb the mountain...
You try to take a step forward, but something catches your foot and sends you sprawling. You expect to catch yourself on hard ground. This is worse.
...never...
You're falling. Falling, into the dark, unable to see, unable to hear.
...return.
You're filled with determination.
