You were done with the fighting, your arms and legs were too tired, your eyes could barely stay open. The fight had been brutal, but it wasn't very surprising, seeing that Asriel was almost a god now, with seven human souls, and all the souls of the monsters in the underground. He could destroy the entire world, if he wanted to. But right now, it only seemed like he was focused on you, and not resetting the timeline.

But now there was nothing you could do. Your legs were tired from running and dodging Asriel's attacks, which had continued for an hour straight with no breaks whatsoever. Running and running, getting hit and feeling your bones snap like twigs. You should have died when this battle started. You should have died in the first hit.

But you didn't die. You fought back.

But now? Now you were too tired to do anything.

Asriel had stopped, watching you, looming above you. He hurt your eyes. The colors were all too bright, and his attacks only made you dizzy while you ran. He was too tall, too big, too strong for you to beat. But he was curious to see what you would do next, since you had exhausted all your resources.

You tried to breathe, but your lungs felt like they were deflating and refusing to fill up with air. You tried to take a step away from Asriel, but your legs buckled and you fell back. You flinched, and you didn't even know you made a sound until you heard the echo of your own screams in the empty void. The fight had hurt your ears too, with all the loud attacks and explosions.

You tried to move again, with absolutely no result now. It seemed like that one fall had drained you of all your energy. Asriel watched you struggle, his head cocked to the right. You tried to move again, only able to twitch your fingers. There was nothing you could do anymore. You couldn't even move, let alone fight this god of hyperdeath.

Tears were streaming down your face, tasting like salt, making your head hurt more than it had throughout your whole fight.

And from the corner of your eye, you see your Save File, glowing softly, in arm's reach. You tried to reach towards your Save File, and you were able to move your arm, only to flinch back in a fit of pain. The fight had really done a number on you.

Instead, you moved towards your pocket, and pull out a piece of Monster Candy and pop it into your mouth. You felt a little better, since it was grape flavored. You moved your arms again, now with only a dull ache that was fading into a memory.

You reach out to your Save File, but it didn't seem to work anymore. It looked like it had been damaged during the fight, maybe by some attack. A bit of it had broken off from a corner. You couldn't load your save. You glanced back at Asriel, and was surprised to find his slowly inching forward, looking over your shoulder to look at your save file.

You reach into your pocket again and eat a Hot Dog, which made a sort of barking noise while you were eating it, but it seemed happy enough about being eaten. You were back to full health, but still it was only twenty HP, not enough to fight Asriel.

In the back of your head came a voice.

You can't load your Save File, but maybe, with what little power you have left, you can save something else, the voice said. The same voice that had been guiding you and helping you throughout your whole journey, even up to this point, translating monster speech, the AT and DF of each monster, and giving you hints where to go. Their name was Chara.

Chara was quiet for a moment. There was something else she needed to say, but she didn't really know how to say it, and she didn't want to say it. Chara wasn't telling you something, something important.

The Lost Souls appeared in front of you, white pixels blurring their faces out, floating in the air in front of you, only an arm's length away. In a straight line there was Asgore, Toriel, Undyne, Sans, Papyrus, and Alphys. They were all there, unharmed, but they didn't look conscious, they were simply there, limp and floating.

You almost reached out to Papyrus before Chara stopped you.

Choose carefully. You can only save one, Chara said. You pulled back your hand like it had been burnt. You vision became distorted in tears, looking around at the blurs in your vision, the white that blocked their faces, the color of their clothes, the general shapes of their floating bodies. You were so close you could touch them, but you couldn't save them.

"I can't." you said, your lungs out of air, breathing in short, uncontrolled breaths, with tears staining your face. This was so much worse than the fight. You would rather do the fight all over again than choose. You turned back to Asriel, who was still watching.

This had been his plan. Of course there would have been enough souls to become a god without yours, with all of the monsters' souls. He was going to make you choose.

You have to choose, Chara said, quiet but persistent in your mind. She was right, but you didn't want to believe it. Not yet, at least. You couldn't just save one and leave all the others behind. There were too many people, not enough saves.

"I can't choose." you say, just in time, almost touching Toriel's face, but flinching back just in time as you glanced at the blue of Sans's jacket.

But you can't not choose, Chara said, you have to save at least one person, don't you?

"I don't want to choose." You said.

But you have to, or not one will be saved.

"It's not fair." you replied.

Nothing is fair.

You wiped away your tears, took a deep breath, and with a burst of bravery, you reached out.

And everything was gone.
