The door creaked open. Heather was positioned in front of me with a warm smile on her face. The first thing I noticed was the amount of perfume she was wearing; you would think her shower water was flavored passionberry. I crinkled my nose, but quickly replaced it with a smile.
"Bayley! I haven't seen you in ages! My, you've grown so much!" She was practically bouncing with excitement as she came over and gave me a hug (Nothing is more uncomfortable than hugging in my opinion). I just stood there awkwardly, my arms locked at my sides while she squeezed the living bejeezus out of me.
"Its good to see you too" I answered back once she released me. Then I noticed the fancy dress that she had on, paired with expensive black heels.
"Are you going on a date?" I questioned, flashing a mischevious smile. She caught on and cackled. Busted.
"It so happens that I am, detective" She teased, running a hand through her wavy black hair. I have to say, for a women in her late 30's, she was strikingly beautiful. Her and my mom have been friends ever since college, so I wasn't surprised when she chose me to watch her kids tonight. After all, I don't think anyone else would take on three boys at once.
"You can come inside now" she said, interrupting my thoughts.
"Oh right" I laughed lightly, "Who's the lucky man?"
"Just some guy I met at the office yesterday" She replied dreamily, lifting her purse off the counter. I opened my mouth to speak, but loud rock music suddenly awakened from somewhere in the house. What the...? I shot Heather a confused look.
"Oh, that's just the renters downstairs. Did I forget to mention it to you?" She said casually. I just nodded.
"Well, we had to rent out our basement so we could pay the bills. Don't worry, they're totally normal. It's just their son that I'm worried about. He's around your age, and apparently a troublemaker." Great! So now I'm going to have to deal with four boys? This isn't going to end well.
"As long as he doesn't bother me I'm sure I'll be fine" I said with much more confidence than I felt. Something about this mystery boy didn't sound right. Putting the uneasiness aside, I changed the subject.
"Where's Jake and the others?" I asked her. Jake was sort of the ring leader. He's 9, and being the oldest, has control over the others- Blake (7) and Tommy (4). If I had to sum all of them up with one word, it would be insane. They break things, steal candy, play pranks, spill everywhere, mess things up, and basically anything related to that. The last time I babysat for them was two and a half years ago, and I remember by the time it was over I was practically in tears, and Jake hurled a baseball at their flatscreen T.V. and knocked it to pieces.
I shuddered at the memory. Good thing I was more experienced now. There was no way I was going to let those boys out of my sight! Now, where could they be...
I felt something small and hard hit the back of my head. "Ow!" My hands flew up and cupped the bruise that was now forming. Their just lucky I didn't get a concussion! Is that... Is that a Bebe caught in my hair? Seriously! I spun around to come face to face with the little gang of devils themselves.
"Well well well" I said overdramatically, crossing my arms, "Who's is this?" I held up the florescent green bebe between my fingers. They all looked up at me with their big chocolate brown eyes, not saying a word. I lifted an eyebrow.
"Okay. If someone isn't going to fess up..." I trailed off, flicking the ammo into the kitchen trash. Score! I looked back into there oh so innocent eyes.
"You're all going to pay!" The boys screamed in sync and began racing up the stairs. I cackled evilly and started jogging up, clutching the banister for support. Wow, I am so out of shape. Before I reached the top, I looked over my shoulder and waved to Heather. She grinned and mouthed me a 'good luck' before disappearing out the back door.
