"Stop fidgeting," Paisley huffed for the fifth time, as if it were going to work differently from the previous times she'd told the brunette besides her to stop fidgeting in her seat. They were sitting in the waiting room, waiting to be called in to have an ultrasound and (potentially) find out the gender of Cara's baby. Cara was running on, like, three litres of orange juice and not much else.
"I am not fidgeting," Cara argued for the fifth time, cutting a glare across to the blonde besides her. Paisley was flipping through a magazine, as if her best friend wasn't having an internal dilemma. "I should have told him, shouldn't I? I shouldn't have kept this from him― he deserves― he deserves to be here because this is his baby, too,"
"I feel like it's too late for you to be thinking about this now," Paisley's brows drew together as she looked over at her friend. "If you'd told him yesterday, he might be here,"
"Yesterday, I was too busy 'laying down the truth'," She said, quoting Raspberry's comment on her earlier instagram post. "I should've told him― maybe I should reschedule for next week."
"Don't you dare do that,"
Cara's head snapped to face the direction the voice had come from, her eyes landing on Dylan and Holland as they stood side by side, smiling brightly. "What― what are you doing here?"
"Paisley messaged us the details," Holland replied easily, sliding into the empty chair at Cara's left, "We weren't going to miss this, regardless of whether or not you wanted us here. The others are here, too. Whilst they were fighting over who got to come with Dylan, the two of us managed to sneak away from the hotel and just left them there. It took them ten minutes to realise we were gone," She laughed, and god did Cara miss her. Holland had been so welcoming to her when they first started speaking, almost a year ago. She didn't know how she managed the last four months without her.
"I missed you," She said, instead of commenting on anything else that the woman said. Holland laughed, leaning over the arms of the chairs and hugging Cara, who clung to the redhead tightly.
"I've missed you too, Cara," She said, "And you have forgiven me, right? Because honestly I never really liked Thea all that much but Dylan, the idiot that he is, did―,"
"Can we not talk about her, please?" Cara cut her friend off as she pulled away, "What's important today is this little one," She placed her hand on her stomach, feeling the baby's fluttering kicks beneath her palm. The baby had only started kicking a few nights ago, and Cara had hardly been able to remove her hand from her stomach, since. Cara looked up at Dylan, smiling weakly. "Do you want to―?" She gestured at her stomach with her free hand, then held it out to Dylan. "The kicking started a few days ago, and so far I've been the only one to feel them,"
"She said it was wrong for someone else to feel the baby kick before the father," Paisley laughed to her right.
"Why are you exposing me like this?" Cara scrunched her face up at her friend, but the expression melted away when Dylan placed his hand in her still outstretched one. She looked back at him, found him grinning down at her. She turned his hand, so that she was clutching the back of it instead of the palm, and placed it against her bump. The baby fluttered, she could feel it, and Dylan could feel it, too, if the wide yes and open mouth were anything to by.
"That's our baby?"
"That's our baby." She nodded.
"Cara Brooks?"
"That's us," Cara stood from her chair, smiling, her hand once again going to her stomach. "We'll be out in a few." She told Paisley and Holland, who made no move to follow the two. So, assuming that they weren't going to join her and Dylan, the soon-to-be parents hurried into the ultrasound room.
She went through the same motions as she did the last time she was here, only then she had Paisley with her. She lay down, pulled her shirt up, and let the sonogram technician squirt the gel onto her stomach. This time, however, was different, because no sooner had the tool been pressed against her stomach, Dylan was grabbing her hand, his fingers weaving through hers. She squeezed his hand, her eyes moving towards him briefly before they were flickering towards the screen as her baby's heartbeat filled the room.
"So, are you ready to find out the sex of your baby?"
"Yes! I mean, yes, I am ready, and I am calm," Cara blurted out, barely getting a breath in as she spoke. Dylan laughed, squeezing her hand once again, though he wasn't looking at her, just like she wasn't looking at him. They were both staring at their baby. Their baby.
"It looks like you two are having a little girl," The woman smiled at them.
"A girl?" Cara repeated, staring wide-eyed at the blurry baby on the screen. She turned her head to face Dylan, his grin mirroring her own. "Dylan, we're having a girl,"
"Yes we are," He grinned, pressing a kiss to the back of her hand. "We're going to have to seriously revise that name list you've got." He laughed.
The first thing they did when they left the room was exclaim, rather loudly, that they were having a girl to Holland and Paisley, both of whom leapt from their seats to wrap the soon-to-be parents in a group hug. As they left the hospital, Dylan phoned the rest of the gang to meet them at Cara's Mother's house, so that the two of them could tell them the news together. Cara couldn't help but think how brilliant her life was at that very moment.
