Imagine that you live in a two story house consisting of two square rooms stacked on top of each other. There is no way to see any part of either room from the other and there aren't windows in either room. There is an old-fashioned lightbulb in the upper room and a light switch panel in the lower room. The panel has three light switches on it, only one of which turns on the upstairs light. You don't know which one turns on the light and none of the switches are labeled in any way. You are standing downstairs next to the panel. By making only one trip upstairs, how can you figure out which switch turns on the light? You can flip as many switches as you want but you can only go up to check once. You can't see the light or the lightbulb at all from downstairs.
***There are no loopholes or tricks to this riddle! I've given you all the info you need. :)***
Answer: The lightbulb is old-fashioned and therefore gives off heat. To solve the puzzle, flip one switch and wait for several minutes. Then flip that switch off and turn on another switch. Don't touch the third one. Go upstairs. If the bulb off but warm, it's the first switch. If it's on, it's the second. If it's neither warm nor on, it's the third switch.
