"Shut up!" I shrieked, tossing and turning, fiercely grabbing my pillow and pulling it over my head. Currently, all I could hear was constant groaning from my parents room. Maybe they were sick? I don't know, all I did know is that they were annoying. Guess I should get up and go check it out.
I sighed, throwing my pillow across my room, then flipped back over and threw my legs over my queen sized bed. I yawned, stretching out my arms and opened my eyes. Thankfully I didn't get up facing the window. I pushed myself up from the bed, and stumbled out of my room, my legs still regaining feeling. When I got to the story, I slowly pulled it open while trying to stretch my fingers. Once opened, I stared walking left down the hall, till I stopped at my parents slightly cracked open door, where the groans have turned louder, angrier. I shook my head slightly in confusion, before wrapping one hand around the door knob and the other grasping the door where it was slightly cracked open. I slowly pushed the door open, while speaking.
"Hey mom, dad, are you okay..?" I asked in a steady voice, peering into the room. At the sound of my voice, their heads snapped in my direction and I gasped. My mom was on the floor, her arm in a position where it looked like it was twisted three times and left there. My dad was standing, slouching near the bed. I took in their appearance. Their eyes were pure white, greenish/gray crust forming around their eyes, and red crust at the corners of their mouths. They were deathly pale, and looked skinny as a bone. When it looked like their endless white eyes focused on me, they snarled and lunged at me.
I screamed.
I backed up and slammed the door closed, lingering around for a few seconds listening to their nails screeching against the dark oak wood of the door. I panted heavily, and looked around for something to keep the door closed. Sadly; nothing. I braced myself and let go of my firm grip on the doorknob, staying for about two seconds to see if their figured a way to open the door without my holding onto it. Luckily, yes. I sighed in relief, and ran back down the hall, past my room and barged into my little sister's room. I wanted to cry in happiness when I discovered she was still her normal self, sleeping soundly on her birch wood single Disney bed.
I rushed over to her, shaking her awake and shushed her when she started to whine.
"Leigh, you need to listen to me. I need you to get up and make no noise at all, take a backpack and pack everything that you need. As in, clothes, toilet paper, shoes, socks, blanket, pillow, everything that can help you stay alive. I know you're probably confused right now, but just listen to me, okay?" I said in a rush, desperately trying to get her to understand without asking too many questions.
"What wh-" she started, but I gave her a distressed look that shushed her, and got her to get up and grab a backpack.
"When you're done, get to my room as quickly and soundlessly as possible." I whispered, before rushing back into my room, but not before I looked over to my parent's room. My eyes widened in fright when I saw the door was off it's hinges, and on the floor. I ran to my room, shutting the door and grabbed a backpack. I pulled open my closet, grabbing a couple of shirts, pants, skirts, dresses, anything that my hands went in contact too, then threw them into my bag. I moved onto my shoes, grabbing tennis shoes and my favorite pair of combat boots, thankfully already having socks in them. I looked down at my attire, seeing I was in PJ's and no footwear. I cursed, changing as fast as I could into pants and a shirt, putting on socks and my combat boots. I shut my closet, going over to my nightstand, grabbing my phone and putting it in my back pocket then opening a drawer. I pulled out random pairs of bras and underwear, stuffing them in. I moved over to my other nightstand, my eyes lingering on a photo of me and my two best friends, and another beside it of me and my family. I smiled and put them in my bag, and noticed a book on my bed.
I didn't care what it was, I just stuffed it in. Entertainment, you know? Finally, I ran to my bathroom and stuffed toilet paper in, pads, and a brush. My backpack was practically filled now, and no room at all for a blanket and a pillow. All I had room for was maybe some food.
Food!
I rushed out of my bathroom, and nearly ran into Leigh, my littler sister. I roughly grabbed her arm, whispering, "let's go" before dragging ourselves out of my room. I quietly tip-toed us down the hall, and on the way peering into my parent's room.
Empty.
I was scared out of my wits, but still remained calm to get me and Leigh out safe and sound. We made it to the staircase, and we went down and I rushed us to the kitchen. I opened the fridge and grabbed water bottles, and told Leigh to stuff them in her bag, and I grabbed verious of canned food and stuffed it in the remaining space in my bag.
I don't know why, but seeing my parents, what seemed that they were dead, yet alive, triggered something in me that screamed, "GET OUT, SURVIVE" as if I was in an episode of The Walking Dead. I shook it off, and continued to go with my gut feeling. I shut the fridge, not bothering to go through the cabinets for more canned food. I pulling Leigh with me to the front door, but I saw something shinning at the corning of my eyes.
Car keys!
I made my way over to the keys, grabbing them and putting them in my pocket for a moment, when my eyes made it's way to a baseball bat and my insides told me to grab it and go. I followed that instinct. I went over to the baseball bat, and grabbed it but froze when I heard a scream. My head snapped behind me, when I realized Leigh wasn't with me but rather still at the door. On the floor. Our mom was on top of her, trying to claw at her and what seemed to be was to bite her. I frowned, and slowly sneaked up behind her.
Forgive me, mommy..
I said in my head, closing my eyes and lifting the baseball bat over my head, then swung down. I heard a crack and a smash, and felt some oo-ey liquid appear on my arms and soaking through my clothes. I opened my eyes to see mom on the floor next to Leigh dead, her head caved in. I looked down at myself, too myself covered in blood.
My mother's blood.
I almost started crying, but felt arms wrap around me and I realized it was Leigh. And she was crying.
"Hey hey.. it's okay, let's just get out of here okay? Before someone else attacks us," I soothed, brushing down her hair. I wanted to get out of here before dad found us and attacked us. I felt her nod into my stomach, and I grabbed her arm softly and opened the front door, walking out and taking out the keys in my back pocket to my mom's black Honda. I went over to the passenger side, unlocking the door and telling Leigh to get in and lock the door, unlock my door and get in the back. I went to the driver side, opening it and handing Leigh my backpack so she can have it in the backseat with her. I shut my door and locked it, inserting the keys into the engine and starting the car up. Once it roared to life, I saw dad stumble out the door. When I made eye contact with him, he began running towards the car. I shrieked, putting the car in reverse and backing out the driveway. And with that, I just drove off, thinking what happened this morning, and what will be to come.
But no matter what, we are never safe.
