One Autumn Knight

Today's the day. The day that I, Autumn Marie Knight, will start my seventh school for my senior year. I understand that, with the current circumstances, I have to move around a lot. But honestly, seven schools is a little much and I should just be home-schooled.

After mentally complaining about my newest school, I walked upstairs to my room. I pick out some shorts and a tank top before I remember that we aren't in California anymore; we're in Washington. I threw my first outfit on my chair and looked in my half-filled closet for something warmer. Finally, I settled for a light green and blue sweater and some sweats that I found in one of the boxes on my floor. I wasn't worried about first impressions obviously. I gave myself a quick glance in the mirror, grabbed my keys and backpack, and headed towards the door. I thought no one was home until my mom called for me from the kitchen. Damn her, she's going to make me late on my first day.

“Yeah mom?” I yelled impatiently.

“I need your help with something! It will only take a moment, I promise.”

I walked into the kitchen to find her on a stool trying to reach the second box of Christmas lights while holding onto the ones she already partially hung. Even though it was only November, my mom was big on Christmas at any point of the year. I handed her the lights and started walking out of the kitchen.

“Autumn, I just need one more thing.” Ugh, what now?!

I turned around and looked around for what she could possibly be. Then I saw it. She left the staple gun completely across the room. I handed it to her and plastered on a smile. I ran out the front door before she asked me for anything else.

I started the car and backed out rather quickly. I had to slam on my brakes when someone walked right behind my car. I looked back to see a scared and awkward looking girl who seemed to be close to my age. I got out of the car and looked at her.

“Are you okay?” I asked, “I didn't even see you!”

“Uh, yeah, um sorry..”

“No, it's my fault because I was in such a hurry.” I noticed her shaking as she started to continue on her way, “Where are you headed?”

She turned back, “West-front Peak”

“That's where I'm starting school! Want a ride?”

She hesitated but nodded and walked to my car. I unlocked her door and we headed towards school. This girl was different but at least I kind of know someone.

“So..,” I started, “What's your name?”

“Summer Creed”

“No way! My names Autumn!” I said slightly more excited than I should have been.

“Oh uh cool.”

After that short and awkward conversation, we drove on in silence other than her giving me directions until we got to the school. I parked the car in the back part of the parking lot so I didn't earn any unwanted attention. I grabbed my backpack out of the back and realized that Summer was already gone. Before I could over-think anything, the final bell rang.

“Shit. What a great way to start the year.”
