Chapter 3

We entered into a huge room. It felt like a gatehouse of some sort. Damon got us through pretty quickly, I guess it shouldn’t really be hard for two vampires. The guardians really threw me off, all of them were so blonde and tall and gorgeous. I played with my own silvery hair, it was a lot different. Theirs looked to be spun from gold. Now, I’ve never been one to really care, but Elena was supposed to be one of them, you could see it seeping out of all of them. The same golden hair, lapis eyes, and Damon had already fallen for it… Twice. Some people might just shrug and say that blondes are his type and I shouldn’t worry because I’m blonde, but honestly when surrounded by at least ten of them, I get scared. Maybe I’m just not enough to hold him in one place with one girl forever. He’s definitely not the type to stay anywhere for any long period of time…

“Come on,” He said, taking my hand. I couldn’t help but grip it tighter as we went into the sea of people. “I sent Sage to try and find us a place to live,” He told me.

“That’s great,” I managed to squeak out. I looked around to see starving children and mothers begging for money, slaves shrinking into themselves as to not be seen, and there was one little boy, covered in dirt all by himself. He had black hair and black eyes and was really thin. He reminded me a lot of Damon actually. Thinking back to what Damon had said earlier, I drew back closer to Damon and continued walking, not looking back to the little boy.

We finally made it out of the crowds and we stopped outside a little bar.

“So this is what you used to do,” I said smugly, shaking off all my previous feelings and burying them deep inside to show only what I wanted.

“Yeah, but that was a long time ago,” He said laughing. He leaned against the wall and pulled me on top of him.

“What about Sage?” I asked.

“He’s in there,” Damon replied. He kissed me, in that evil way that he likes to that really make me wish pants didn’t exist. And just like always, I slid my hands under his shirt and started to run them down his glorious stomach. He managed to let me get to just the bottom before stopping me.

“You’re evil darling,” He said to me. I just smirked and pulled away from him.

“I can’t say I miss the days when you were stronger,” I joked.

“I’m still stronger, you’ve just caught up a bit,” He said with a cocky smile. I let it drop and pulled Damon into the bar. Sage found us pretty quickly.

“Ah, mes amis, come with me,” He said and led us back out into the street. Damon and him talked quietly while I stared around. The sun dyed everything a different color with it’s bloody light. My own platinum hair was transformed into a bright red. Earlier in the day, I’d seen some stunning red haired guardians, even now, my hair couldn’t match the beauty of theirs. Damon had also been fond of Bonnie, another red head of the same beauty. Before Damon could catch me, I shoved all my feelings away and turned back to the monstrous buildings in front of me. Eventually, we stopped outside a bigger house. If it was a big house or a small mansion, I couldn’t tell you, but it looked very nice. It was very gothic with all the elaborate iron work.

“Wow,” I said. Looking up at it

“It’s a little empty, but Damon’s never been one to leave things undone,” Sage said. We walked around inside and it was brilliant.

“There’s the basics, like a kitchen and beds, of course,” He explained further. There were also already people working there.

“How did you find this place?” I asked in french. Just to bother Damon.

“The old man finally died and I got it early,” He replied. Damon just rubbed his head. I laughed, both at Sage’s comment and Damon.

“Brilliant,” I said and strolled around. At least we wouldn’t have to paint much. Actually we wouldn’t have to paint anything now that we have servants to do it. I walked up the ornate marble staircase to the second floor.  Sage and Damon stayed downstairs. I guess they hadn’t gotten to cleaning out all of the rooms up here yet. There were still pictures on the remaining dressers. And one looked a lot like my old friend Chris. The one I killed. More than once. I picked up the picture and took it out of the frame. The back read:

Cristopher – 1769

I couldn’t believe my eyes. I tore it and slammed it back on the dresser. One of the maids came in to clear the room.

“Burn that,” I told her, pointing to the picture. She nodded and I got out of that room. I climbed up the next staircase to find a huge room at the top behind big double doors. It had a cathedral ceiling and a huge round balcony. The best was, the walls were black. There wasn’t a bed, so I guessed it wasn’t originally a bedroom, but there was a really nice bathroom with a huge closet in it. I found out why the bathroom was there, another room was on the other side with a real four poster in it. I didn’t like it nearly as much as the other room though. Strong arms wound around my waist and a mop of black hair blocked part of my vision.

“Is this your favourite?” Damon asked me.

“Oh hell no! Come see this,” I said and pulled him into the other room.

“This is something,” He said, taking a good look around but not letting go of me.

“I know, it’s perfectly outrageous for you,” I pointed out.

“For both of us,” He corrected. We had the help move the bed from the other room to this one. We added more furniture but left the rest for later. Damon went to go settle something and I sat in one of the iron chairs. The sun dyed the sights as an eerie painting, bloody and massacred. I could never get used to this distorted beauty. Everything about the underworld threw me off balance. And I can’t believe I found something left of that wretched Christopher. That’s a cruel joke. It couldn’t seriously have been where he lived. Just as I was in the middle of a depressing rant in my own head, I heard Damon clear his throat behind me.

“You’re not safe in there anymore Darling,” He said quietly. It sounded almost… regretful.
