I pulled Chris back by his hood. He grabbed my leg and looked up at the black suited man in front of us. He had a helmet in under one arm, and under the other was a small box. I swallowed and rested my hand on Chris' head.
"Y-yes sir?" I asked.
He slightly smiled stepped into the house, making me step back and Chris ran to the kitchen.
"Hello, I'm Louis Tomlinson, head of the Sector 1 Guards for this area. Is Mrs. Winters here?" he said politely.
I nodded slowly and walked him into the kitchen. My mother turned to us and her eyes widened.
"Mother, someone's here for you." I said and soothed out Maryanna's blanket.
She pulled off her apron and rushed to the livingroom, Mr. Tomlinson following. I stood in the doorway as Mr. Tomlinson handed her the little bow that was under his arm. She pulled out paperwork and a small card with an envelope. She gasped, looking at the papers and the other things, Mr. Tomlinson grinning slightly.
"Thank you, Captain. This means the world to me." she said loudly.
I tilted my head to one side and laid Maryanna in her playpin. Louis got up and shook my mother's hand before walking to the door and leaving.
"What was that about mother? What's in the box?" I asked, peering at the paperwork.
She laid the papers down and her lips formed into a flat line. "Alexandria, you remember when the Guards went to our neighbors and told her she was going to work somewhere else?"
I could feel my eyes sting as I nodded, "Yeah, what of it?"
She pulled gently on my arm, telliing me to sit down infront of her. "Well, they picked me to work away from here... Its a random selection and I had nothing to do with it. They just needed a Sector 1 woman to work. It could give us loads of money, but-"
"But, what?"
"It's in the Old Capital, Alexandria. Washington D.C. Far away from here." she said, looking in my eyes.
I was froze, as if I was paused in a movie. Nothing moved except for my eyes that searched for something in my mother's. I wasn't sure what I was looking for, but I knew I wasn't going to find it. My mother, my little brother, and my little sister were leaving me on my own in this poor town. I couldn't go with her but she wasn't going to tell me that, I already knew. I wasn't planning on working at the Capital, so there was no use; I was just wasted space.
Her bottom lip trembled, "I'm so sorry, baby girl. I have to leave in a couple of hours." she cooed, standing up and walking up to her room.
I stayed put with my hands laced together, staring blankly at the place where the wall met the floor. I listened to my mother fold things and put them into bags, hoping and praying this wasn't happening to my family. I know the girl who lived next door whose mother was choosen. She lives with the baker now because he took her in off the streets.
I stood up shakily and walked to my mother's room, leaning on the door frame.
"Momma." I called like an innocent, scared 4 year old.
She looked up at me and sadly smiled, "Yes Alex?"
"C-can I go with you?" I said shyly.
Her eyes grew dark and a small tear rolled down her cheek, "Baby, you know you can't. You can't just live there and not work."
"But what if I do work?"
She laid down the quilt she was folding and sighed, "You just can't come to the Capital and ask to work. You're 19 and not from the Capital. They'll send you back here."
My lip trembled as I faced the floor, "Oh..."
She stepped toward me and wrapped her arms around my shoulders, "I'll write you."
I nodded and buried my head kn the crook of her neck like I did when I was little. She pecked my cheek and pulled away from me to finish her packing.
"Can you pack for Chris and Maryanna?" she asked sweetly.
I nodded and wiped my eyes. "Sure."
I walked up the stairs and found Chris throwing his small amount of clothes around on the floor. I smiled and placed him on my bed, pulling a bag out from under my bed and folding his clothes.
"Where are me and mommy going, Alex-Sandra?" he asked with his feet swinging off the bed.
"To a big city, with tall buildings and big cars and a lot of people." I answered.
He gasped, "Big cars?"
"Big, shiny cars."
His eye lit up as he threw his shoes in the bag along with his socks, underwear, and all his other things in his bag and zipped it up. "I wanna go see the big cars now! Hurry, hurry!"
I set him on my bed and laid the bag next to him, zipping his jacket. "You're gunna leave soon, okay? Wait until I pack for Maryanna."
He pouted, "Fine. But hurry!"
I nodded and opened his bag, pushing his stuff over and bringing Maryanna's clothes to the bed. Most of her thing were folded, so after I set the pile into the bag I laid her little shoes inside and took the sheets and blankets off their beds. When everything the kids had was folded and in the large bag, I zipped it up and met my mother at the door.
She was dressed in her finest clothes; Her blue p-coat, a white beanie, red rubber boots, and her white mittens. She had her bags beside her with Maryanna in her arm. Chris grabbed his bag and went to her side.
I looked sadly at my family. They looked back at me with blank but sad faces too. Pushing my hair behind me ear, I faced the floor.
"Have fun at the Capital, momma." I said.
She tilted her head and wrapped her free arm around me, kissing all over my face. "I love you, Alexandria. Remember that. I'll write you everyday. Be a good girl and if you need anything, Zayn's mother said you could come to her."
I nodded and held my mother tightly until Mr. Tomlinson came through the door.
"Are we ready, Mrs. Winters?" he asked.
She pulled away from me and nodded, "Yes sir." she said quietly.
He grabbed two of my mother's bags and walked to the car with Chris following him. She gazed at me quietly before a car horn honked, making her jump. She pressed a final kiss to my forehead and walked to the door.
"I love you, baby girl. Be good and be careful." she managed to said as she walked out to the car waiting for her.
I heard the car engine roar to life and before I could think, I was running for my mom. The snow hit me like bullets as I chased the car, clenching my fists and yelling for her.
"Mom! Come back! Don't leave me here! I can't do this!" I screamed, gritting my teeth to keep from shaking.
"Momma, please come back! I need you!" I screamed, feeling my feet slip out from under me and falling into the snow, face first.
"M-momma... Come back..."
