"Hey, I'm home." I said as I walked through the door.
"What'd you get?" Jeremy questioned from the kitchen.
I dropped the bag on the counter. "Nutella, celery, popcorn, the works." I smiled wide.
He held his hand out for a high five, which I do kindly delivered. "Everything we need for a TV show marathon."
"I wouldn't get too set on that idea." Elena said. She and Stefan walked into the kitchen side by side.
"What?"
"Why?"
"I need you to help me find one of the Gilbert Journals. Jonathan Gilbert's." Elena clarified.
"But we were going to watch The Walking Dead!" I complained.
"Look, we're doing this to get Damon out of Mystic Falls." She said. "The sooner, the better."
I tilted my head. I suppose it made sense. But he kind of saved our lives last night, him and Stefan. Didn't that count for something? It did in my book.
Jeremy, sensing this wasn't his conversation, left the kitchen. That's when Stefan decided to speak up.
"He's hurt you, Veena. Don't you want him gone?"
"Well, yeah I guess. But he's your brother. Do you want him gone?"
"He may be my brother, but he stopped acting like one ages ago." Stefan replied with a shrug. "All he's doing is hurting the people around him."
"Do you think Damon believes us? That we'll all try to help him?" Elena asked Stefan as she went through a box full of old dusty books. Those must be all the journals.
"I don't think Damon knows what to believe." He said. "Trust isn't something that comes...naturally to him.
"You know, I really think that Damon believes that everything he's done, every move he's made, he's done for love." Elena said with a small nod. "It's twisted, but kind of sad."
"Is this that Katherine girl he mentioned last night?" I asked.
Stefan nodded and then returned his attention to Elena. "There are other ways to get what you want. You don't have to kill people. Damon has no regard for human life. He enjoys inflicting pain on others." He leaned forward in his chair. "For one hundred and forty five years every time I have let my guard down and let Damon back into my life, he's done something to make me regret that. I'm not going to make that mistake again."
Well, that was a little pessimistic...
"So what do you think is going to happen if the tomb gets opened and Damon gets Katherine back?" Elena questioned.
"I think no matter what Damon promises, a lot of people will die."
It hit me like a bag of bricks. What was I thinking last night? Damon's obviously a bad person and he's proven it to me. He hurt me, yet it wasn't really bothering me. It should bother me! It should bother me to no end!
I let out a loud groan and went upstairs. I just wanted to get some rest. After I changed my clothes and put my hair up, I crawled into bed and lay awake for a few minutes until I finally felt myself drift off.
I violently flung myself into a sitting position on my bed, breathing heavy after hearing the door slam downstairs. A puff of air left my lips from my irregular breathing as I tore the comforter away from my body, got out of bed and left the confines of my bedroom.
"Hello?" I called out, looking down on the first level and scanning the area for any intruders. It was probably just Jeremy returning from a night with his stoner friends. After a few seconds with no response, I called out again. "Jeremy?" A shadow passed through the light on the floor before disappearing. Carefully, I made my way down the stairs. If the kid was pranking me, I swear to God he would get what was coming for him.
