The day ticked by sluggishly and the pile of paperwork seemed to diminish at even slower rate than before. She was hallucinating over the laziness of her 'boss', the dates on some of the files going as far as several years back. It was even more difficult to work now that her mind was full of all the things she had to do before her new place was fit for her to stay for any duration. The whole situation was frustrating and she doubted very much that rest was in the order of the day.
So many problems and the only solution for her to get any sleep was to take some heavy duty tranquilizers. If she didn't take the pills the nightmares would keep her awake for the better part of the night. Sometimes she believed that Karma was a hardcore bitch. Alice closed her eyes and massaged them slowly, trying to find her calm.
There was a knock at her door and she almost jumped out of her skin. Ever since Aidan paid her the visit earlier that day, her mind kept wandering back to the image of his eyes. And to her proper dismay to the feeling she got when he was so close to her.
- Yes? – she called trying not to sound flustered.
- Can I come in? – came Darens casual voice from behind the doors separating their offices and for some reason Alice felt disappointment flush over her. Composing herself in a few seconds she shook her head and answered in a strong, calm tones.
- Do you really need my permission for this?
- Sadly, yes I do, - there was irritation in his voice now. – Father said I had to be respectful of you or he'll send me to oversee our latest installment in Iceland, and I would rather not freeze my bal... butt off. Now, can I come in or will you torture me 'till I drop from exhaustion behind this effing door?
- Yes, you can come in, Daren, - Alice said unable to keep her amusement from her voice. Behind his show-off façade, Daren was a nice and funny guy. His problem was that there was a big portion of douche in his personality and it made him completely irritating on so many levels that it was purely and ostentatiously outraging.
The door swung open and he strode in and moving straight for her visitors' chair in that peacockish way of his. Alice looked up at him and raised her eyebrow in question, a shadow of a barely suppressed smile playing on the corners of her mouth.
- So... My father has payed you a visit. – It wasn't a question, but a statement. He was avoiding her eyes the whole time he talked as if trying to not give away his feelings.
- Yes, - Alice put down the file in the pile of sorted ones and took another one. – And?
Daren stood up and went to the window to look into the darkening skies. The silence dragged as the question hanged in the air. She had never thought that he could be hesitant, but he reeked of hesitation right now. He glanced at her reflection in the window and seemed to make up his mind.
- You finally accepted to move to one of our complexes. – Again this wasn't a question, but a confirmation. She stared at him wide-eyed. Was he jealous?
