I sat frozen in place in a plush seat in my private compartment of the boat. Naercey was inching closer at a pace I did not enjoy. I wished for us to just freeze in place and reverse our journey.
While lost in my own thoughts I did not notice Maven approach me. I jumped when he placed his hand upon my shoulder. Turning to look at him I saw a familiar spark of concern in his eyes that quickly faded.
"Are you ready?" His voice was firm and held a warning, telling me if I dare betrayed the crown I would die.
I nodded and he held my hand as I got to my feet. He led me through the boat to a separate room. I expected it to be some form of changing room but instead I found Maven's personal quarters. He closed the door behind us and went over to the closet in the corner of the room. He pulled out a black jump suit with silver and red stripes. While it could have been mine cause it held the colors of my house it was not. It was slightly too large. The suits we were to wear while training get snugly but still gave us range of motion. He approached me with the suite and handed it out to me. I didn't quite understand.
"Put it on," it was an order. It wasn't gentle or kind, it was demanding.
Uneasily I started taking my clothes off. I wasn't too concerned about Maven seeing me without my clothes. Growing up on the front lines, even though I was very young, made changing in front of men natural. However this did not mean I wasn't uneasy about my body. Once I had the tight red pants and glistening silver shirt I had been wearing off I slipped into the jumpsuit. It was clearly Maven's. It smelled like him and it was clear it hugged his features. It hung loosely enough on me that I knew it would be difficult to wear.
"Maven this is too big," I sighed. "Why do I even need to wear it?"
With an unamused look he snapped his fingers and in rushed two Red servants. I was still shocked there were Red servants. The world was in uproar over a enigma that was a Red, and yet we still forced, and trusted them, to bow to our will.
Quickly they adjusted seems, cutting, snipping, and restitching the fabric. I expected to at least get poked once but to my surprise I went unscathed. I imagined their fear being before the man who had forced the Red world to it's knees.
Once completed they rushed from the room and Maven gave me a once over. They had refitted his jumpsuit to my body and it fit like my own.
"You didn't tell me why I had to wear this," I scoffed.
He stepped towards me and rested his thumb under my chin.
"Soon you will be my queen. You belong to me and they need to know it," his voice was firm but his eyes were soft.
I jerked my head away. I wasn't gonna fall for his tricks. He wanted Mare and was using me to get to her. I was a tool for his will and nothing more. He could try his hardest to convince me he cares, that he wants me to be at his side, but it was all a facade I could see straight through.
We both felt the boat come to a slow stop and quickly made our way to the deck without another word.
My breath caught when we entered the cool air and Naercey lie before us. This was it. Now was when I chose a side.
With one last glance at Maven I stepped towards the ramp to depart from the boat. Everyone's eyes were on me. Maven and his mother were not the only who had come. House Samos and a few other of the higher houses had come along to watch their future queen depart and begin a hunt that would decide the fate of their world. As I reached the ramp I felt the queens claws dig into my shoulder.
"Don't forget your place girl," her voice rang trough my head, and though I wasn't looking at her I felt her eyes burning into my back.
Without another look back I departed from the boat onto the destroyed island. Once on land I turned and watched them leave. Once out of sight I began to wander, looking over the destruction of the fight that had led to my capture. All was silent for a long while until I heard the familiar whirring of a Snapdragon over head. I looked up and watched the sun glint off its body. Of course they had to keep their eyes on me.
I wandered into the trees were it would be harder for the machine to keep its mechanical eyes on me. Out of curiosity I made my way back to the small home I had made among the trees. It was partly destroyed but appeared untouched. I began going through the destruction and realized I had been deceived. All my things were gone. I had walked into a trap. I let out a sigh as a barrel was pressed to the back of my head.
"Turn around slowly," a voice barked.
I raised my hands slightly and turned to face the person before me. Their face was hidden behind a scarlet bandana, their entire outfit the color of blood. They had found me quicker than I expected, however I was not afraid.
"You're coming with me Silver," the person hissed. "You have some answering to do."
