This is my short story entry for no_suicide 's Suicide Awareness Week Contest, I hope you enjoy, or at least take something important out of this story by the time you're done reading it. Xoxo-Mackensi
What would happen if you were to commit suicide and succeed? Imagine this; You come home from school one day. You've had yet another horrible day. You're just ready to give up. So you go to your room, close the door, and you take out that suicide note you've written and rewritten over and over and over. You take out those razor blades, & you cut yourself for the very last time. You grab that bottle of pills, & you take them all. Laying down, holding that letter to your chest, you close your eyes for the very last time.
You slowly drift away, silently saying goodbye to the people and life you just gave up on, those few people who will never truly get to say goodbye to you themselves.
A few hours later, your little brother comes in to tell you dinner's ready. You don't answer while he knocks on the door, so he walks in. All he sees is you laying on your bed, so he thinks you're asleep.
He tells your mom this. Your mom goes to your room & tries to wake you up. She notices something is odd. She grabs the paper in your hand and reads it. Sobbing, she tries to wake you up. She's screaming your name.
Your brother, so confused, runs and tells your Dad, "Mommy is crying, & sissy won't wake up." Your dad runs to your room & reads the letter.
Looking at your lifeless body, it hits him what's going on. He starts screaming. He throws countless items at the wall. And then, falling to his knees, he begins to cry. Your mom crawls to him, & they sit there, holding each other, crying. The next day at school, there's an announcement. The principal tells everyone about your suicide, about your death and how you're gone forever.
It takes a few seconds for it sink in, & once it does, everyone goes silent. Everyone blames themselves. Your teachers think they too hard on you. That boy that used to tease you & call you names, he can't help but hate himself for never telling you how beautiful you are. Your best friend? She's in complete shock. She can't believe it.
She knew what you were going through, but never thought it would end like this. She can't cry. She can't feel anything. She stands up, walks out of the classroom, and finally sinks to the floor. Shaking, screaming, but no tears, or sounds are coming out.
At your funeral, the whole town came. Everyone who knew you, saw you as the girl who had the bubbly personality, the girl who always smiled. The girl who was always there for them. Everyone's crying.
Your brother still doesn't know what's happening, he's too young to understand. All he knows is that his big sister, she's gone forever and he can never get her back. Your teachers all quit their jobs. That boy who used to tease you, now cuts himself.
Your best friend tried to kill herself. She didn't succeed like you did, but she still tried... Your brother finally found out the truth about your death, once he's old enough to understand, the pain fully sets in.
He cries himself to sleep, he does exactly what you did, leading yourself up to suicide. Your parents? Their marriage fell apart. Your father became a workaholic to distract himself from your death.
Your mother got diagnosed with depression & just lays in bed all day, wondering how she couldn't be enough to see how much her own daughter was struggling.
Stuck constantly wondering where exactly your relationship failed, where exactly she stopped being a good mother. The saddest part of this all?
She will never get her answer from you. Your little brother will never get his sister back, he'll never have the sister he needed growing up to help him, with his homework, girl advice, life advice. Your best friend will never get to graduate with you, and celebrate like no tomorrow because you guys both finished school together.
Your father will never get his little girl back. That boy that was so mean to you will never get to apologize to you. That boy you didn't know liked you will never get to tell you he liked you. Your teachers will never get to talk about how proud they are of you while you stand at a podium at graduation.
You will never be able to get that dream job in literature journalism you wanted so badly. You'll never get to experience college, or true love, or what having children and grandchildren feel like, all because you ended your life!
People care. You may not think so, but they do. Your choices don't just affect you. It affects everyone around you too.
You'll never get to see the better side life has to offer you once you make it over that huge bump in the way of life, not if you give up on life at this moment by committing suicide.Suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined. Everyday approximately 17 Americans take their own lives. A person dies of suicide every 12.3 minutes in the U.S.
Suicide needs to stop, not just once, but forever, starting now. Please, don't make a permanent solution to a temporary issue. I believe we can stop suicide, together. We can show everyone that they're not alone, and that they don't have to do any of this alone.
