On the ship, the monsters, or white people as everyone called them, spoke a foreign language I had never heard of. But by just listening, I was able to pick up a few words. Anyway, I knew I was a quick learner of languages. After just two years, I was fluent in the language I used to speak in Nigeria, Yoruba. When we arrived in America, I knew what 'slave', 'food', 'she', and 'he' were by just listening.
I also realized that the weather changed, the nearer we got to America. It became cooler and cooler. In Nigeria, it was always scorching hot and that was what I was used to but I liked this weather as well. I knew the reason why we came here was to work. If the weather continued this way, the heat wouldn't be much of an issue while working.
We finally anchored at North America on the 25th of July 1818. Coincidentally, that was also my birthday. I turned thirteen on that day and not surprisingly, it wasn't my most memorable birthday. First of all, I looked a mess. I was naked, and my long black hair which was usually shiny and healthy-looking was filthy and tangled. I was covered in two months worth of dirt that even the rain couldn't wash off. Naturally, I didn't feel so good. I was much skinnier than when I had left Nigeria. No thanks to the measly portions of food. Danladi and Danuwa also looked worse for wear and they had grown thinner too.
My brain was quite happy to be back on terra firma but it took my legs a little longer to get used to a ground that didn't move. I'm sure I must have looked quite similar to a drunken sailor when I stumbled off the ship. Then we were cleaned up and 'greased' up. Those cruel monsters actually rubbed animal fat on our skin to make our skin look healthy and shine. What cheek! They starve us then try to make us look good? How can we look good if we're starved?
There were a lot of white people in America. In fact, everyone I could see was white. I whispered this to Danladi and he shrugged and said "I guess this is the land of the white people like our land is the land of the dark-skinned. There are probably people with yellow skin or blue skin or grey skin in other parts of the world." Now when I think back to what he said, I laugh to myself. Then they finally gave us clothes to wear. At last all the evidence of starving is gone. We were all placed in a large yard and a lot of white people were waiting outside.
I suspected what would come next but what I expected seriously could not compare to what really happened. The white men from the ship opened the door to the yard and all hell broke loose...
Okay I'm really sorry that it was so short. I'll give u a longer one for the next part I promise. Leave a comment in the box below pls! I'd be ever so grateful :D
