"No, I wasn't with him."
Wonwoo swallowed back the nervousness and tried not to crumble at the immediate guilt that threatened to devour him. Here he is, outside a cafe two blocks away from his home, voicing lies across gritted teeth.
The weather seemed to be mocking him. It was midsummer and the scorching heat was burning through his skin. People were rushing across the busy streets and children were laughing as they ran and played under the sun. He would've liked it. Wonwoo froze as he tried to destroy the thought.
Sweat trickled down his nape.
"I was with another friend that day, I'm sorry Minghao." Another lie seeped out. Wonwoo tried everything to maintain his eye contact with his companion.
It was hard. Ten years of being best friends, ten years of love, and ten years of pain. Wonwoo cried pools of crystalline tears as vast as the galaxies in the heavens. He lulled himself to sleep at night with his cries, and at day, he tried to smile, hiding painful throbs of his heart behind gleaming eyes and grins. He was not fooled.
Three weeks ago his heart had been shattered. The tiny fragments flew with the merciless winds and he did everything he could to not break down then and there when the news was delivered by the voice that caused his core to bloom with warmth in almost a decade. It was ironic really, when the person who set his cheeks aflame day by day was also the one to paint a deathly pallor to his skin.
"I'm engaged Won! I'm getting married with Hao!" Wonwoo wanted to puke what little he ate for breakfast. On his love's finger was a silver band with intricate carvings engraved around it. He smiled scornfully. "Congratulations." was all he could utter, in high hopes that the small tug upwards across his lips was enough to conceal everything that he wanted to say.
Wonwoo ravished sleep. He wanted no more than to let peaceful, eternal rest dawn upon him. Tears weren't enough, his eyes wouldn't let him shed any more. He wanted to forget, but as long as the pulse keeps beating in his veins, the nightmare would always resurface. It wasn't until he barged in to the sleeping man's apartment when Wonwoo realized. No, it would never be over. As long as the man he loves has oxygen running through his lungs he was willing. Wonwoo would do everything to see his smile. Even if it was meant for someone else. Even if it meant plunging a knife to his heart a million times over.
The giant was messed up. His hair stuck to his forehead and was drenched in sweat and he looked like he ran in the Olympics. After slowing down his ragged breathing, he burst into tears and fell into Wonwoo's unprepared arms. The latter felt constriction in his lungs.
"I love you. So much."
The shorter froze. Soft warm lips were pressed against chapped unmoving ones. A single tear rolled down. Fate laughed a booming one.
"No I wasn't with Mingyu."
He loves me.
