Riley's POV
At the end of the school day Maya told me she had to give me something, and she'd be over by 5. It's now 4:45 and it's pouring down rain.
I tried calling Maya to ask if she wanted me to just take the subway to her house, but she didn't answer.
I sat nervously on the couch in the living room of my apartment, wondering what was happening to not answer my call.
I tried again and again.
All of sudden the buzzer rang loudly and I bounded over to it.
"Maya?" I blurted over the speaker.
"Lucas."
I sighed. "Alright."
He after minutes of waiting I finally heard his familiar knock on the door.
I opened it and plastered a half smile perfunctorily on my face. "Look, Lucas, I'm waiting for someone and it's kinda important, so I'll text you later?"
His face sunk and he nodded. "You're waiting for Maya."
I bit my lip and looked down.
"You don't even have time for anyone else, you're always with your girlfriend!"
"She's not my girlfriend!" I yelled back. That stung.
He spun around on his heels and started back down the hallway. I turned around and was closing the door when I heard a loud: "Hey Riley, why don't you just come out of the closet?" (A/N: reference for my gleeks)
I didn't say anything and turned around to find my mom standing right behind me.
"What was that about?" She planted her hands on hips and shot daggers from her eyes.
"N-Nothing, Lucas is just being a jerk."
She nodded and walked away.
Ugh why? Why does Lucas have to like me? Why can't he just stop hating Maya? Why is he always wanting to talk to me? Did he really mean what he just said..? Maya and I aren't even dating... Even though I'd like to.

I plopped myself back down onto my couch and continued waiting for my best friend. I was beginning to drift off, having weird half-dreams about Maya trying to wake me up.
But it wasn't a dream. I vaguely heard Maya yelling my name from my room upstairs. I bolted up the stairs and found her sitting on the other side of the bay window. I quickly opened the window.
Weird. It was locked.
"I'm so sorry, oh my god."
She crawled through my window, soaking wet, and still looking flawless.
She giggled and stood shivering in the middle of my room. "It's okay, but uh- do you have dry clothes I can borrow?"
I snapped out of my daze, "oh uh right of course." My face turned a bright red as I started to rummage through my dresser getting out the same pajamas Maya always wears here. I handed her the shorts and polka dotted t-shirt, and she changed. I grabbed her a towel and she dried her hair the best she could.
A few moments of silence passed and I decided to break it. "Maya, I need to tell you something."
"Wait, first..." She rung a ring off of one of her fingers. She had two of the same ones.
She took my hands and led me to sit down on the bed.
"Riley Matthews, I not just wanted to give you this but I needed to. In case you ever forget," she laughed and looked into my eyes. I was getting lost in hers. "This is to remind you, and symbolize, that I'm always here for you. I love you, and the way you sing while you're getting your cereal in the morning and how you paint purple cats, how you dance all the time like no one is watching. I love your cute smile, and your hugs and just, everything about you. And I will never stop. This means I'm always here and I'm in love with you. So, here's a promise ring." She stumbled over her last few words, but I can't even get any out.
"Maya I- they're amazing, you're amazing, oh my god- I - I love you."
My heart was racing and I couldn't find a way to thank her enough.
Thank you so much I-" She cut me off with her lips against mine, but I pulled away.
"Maya, are you, what are you saying?"
"I'm saying," Her eyes grazed my room, "Can I call you my girlfriend, because that'd be super cool." She giggled and slid the ring onto my finger. "You're getting this either way." She smiled. "Why would I say no?" I kissed her back.
