The Finding

The sound of crying disrupted the agonizing silence in the dim woods. The Hollows knew the sound unmistaken, and warped and twisted to their fastest forms that they could shift into. The air thinned and froze as their figures twisted and gnarled, reaching the edges of the forest in a black dust. The creator of the curling sound came from a child. Small and vulnerable, curled up and crying. The Hollows circled it, their demeanor dead panned. The child covered its eyes, tightening its figure in fear. A man of ebony hair and a darkened demeanor cast a shadow along the crying figure. The child stopped abruptly, silence filling the woods. It's eyes widened, showing inhuman features. The child shoves its tiny hands in the dirt, balancing itself. The baby looked up to the approaching man, eyes defiant and ruthless.
A woman approached in an old worn dress, drenched from the bottom in blood and branches.
"He's not a peculiar, is he now?" The woman asked.
"Far. But doth farther from human." The man looked at the child with beady eyes, and dilated pupils. He picked the child up, and cradled it. The figures behind him took figure, all of them with eyes similar to the man holding the baby. They looked astonished at the man.
"We'll keep the child. Don't question my authority, he will prove... Useful."
The man proclaimed, and his appearance nor form shifted as he carried the child back to the dark wilderness they called home.
