chapter one. the beginning

"You have to feel it, become part of how the water flows, then you can make it move for you." Madi demonstrated what she meant and pulled the water to form a wall in front of her. "Now you try."

The children of the southern water tribe, old and young, tried to bend the water in front of them to no avail.

"Madi, we've tried this a million times, it's not going to work," a girl from her tribe, Meg, pointed out.

"It has to," Madi sat down in the snow, frustrated with her results. She was trying to find someone else in the Southern Water Tribe that was a bender, and had been for the past 3 days. She was the only bender in her tribe that she knew of and having another bender would not only help the tribe but help her.

She looked around at all the children trying to bend and let out a long sigh. "You know what...I don't think it's going to work. Sorry for wasting these past three days, you can go now." Madi waved them off with a sigh, turning away from the kids that were leaving and looking at the water instead.

Her whole life she couldn't help but feel like she was different, and when she found out she was a bender the feeling just grew. She felt like she was meant for something more, something better than getting water from deep within a well. She knew she wasn't the Avatar, that was a girl named Téa from the earth kingdom, but she knew her life wasn't supposed to be as simple as it was now. The waterbender thought that finding another bender in her tribe would not only help her feel like she wasn't an outcast, but also help relieve her of her duties so she could find herself.

She sighed, clutching her necklace that her mom gave her, it was a moon pendant with a blue gem in the center of it. She turned to leave and go back with the tribe when she heard a splash behind her. Turning around she saw an otter penguin jump out of the water and onto the ice in front of her. It had a scroll tied to its neck like it was a messenger and Madi carefully undid the knot holding it to the penguin's neck.

As the penguin got up she unrolled the letter, on the top of it her pendant was drawn. Must be for me, she shrugged, and started to read the letter.

Dearest Emily,

Who in the world is sending my mom a letter with my pendant on it? Madi thought. She racked her brain for people that left the tribe that recently left and came up empty. Again she shrugged and kept reading.

I hope this letter comes to you in good health. It has come to my attention that we have a daughter. I feel it is my right as her father to be able to see her. I would like to invite her to my other daughter's 16th birthday ceremony, in one month. I hope that she can come and make up for lost time, but for now please give her the otter penguin this letter came on as a gift.

And if you are reading this Madi, I am looking forward to meeting you.

With love,

Poseidon

Madi dropped the letter in shock. "My dad is alive? And he's Poseidon?" She whispered to herself.

Reese and Flynn washed onto the island, Reese was soaking wet, Flynn was dryer than him, and their friend Dale had earth bended to get onto the island and was completely dry. "I told you we shouldn't have flown through that storm," Flynn said to Reese as he bended the water off of them.

"Well I'm sorry that the clouds were in the shape of a dog and I thought that was a good thing."

"They were not in the shape of a dog," Dale piped up from the bed of grass she was sitting on. "Where are we?"
