*** Chapter 2 ***

The sunlight from the open window was burning my eye lids. It was morning or maybe the afternoon, I didn't know which since I was refusing to open my eyes. Once I opened my eyes I would be acknowledging that it was a new day, that I had to really start my mission. That I had to put the freedom and happiness from last night behind me and get serious. I wasn't ready for that, I told myself I only needed one night but I lied. I didn't need one night but every night for the rest of my life. But, that couldn't happen so I opted for the next best thing, not opening my eyes. Not recognizing that a new day had started for as long as I could, if that meant lazying in bed with my eyes closed so be it. This is what I wanted, to be carefree even if it's a lie.
I laid there with my eyes closed for hours, just listening to the noise around me.

A cool breeze swirled around me making me realize that I must of left the window open. It was calming and made me feel like I should actually go back to sleep.
I was evening out my breathing and was about to doze off when I heard the sound of crackling static.

My radio that I had on my night stand came to life. The second I heard my commanding officer's voice I groaned. Why is he bothering me, it's only day 2 of my mission?

"Special operative Grace come in, this is your commanding officer report in soldier."

I rolled over putting my back to my radio and pulled the cover over my head. Would I get in trouble if I just ignored him and went to sleep? It's not like he knows what I'm doing, I could be fighting Shalion's soldiers right now for all he knows.

After the fifth time he radioed in I gave up my pursuit of ignoring him and going to sleep. I rolled over and for the first time today I opened my eyes.

I had braced myself thinking I was going to get blinded by a bright light but the room was dark.
I looked out the window and saw that the sky was a warm pink and orange hue. The sun was setting, I had succeeded in postponing the mission for another day. I smirked while answering the radio.

"Sir, this is special operative Grace reporting in."

"Where have you been soldier? Never-mind that, have you reached target 1025?"

"Not as of yet sir I am still within the bounds of the capital."

"Why are you still in Ava? You should have been staking out the target area and developing a plan of action."

"I'm sorry sir, time must have gotten away from me. I am well prepared to use my time wiser in the next 5 days."

"You better, I gave you 7 days for this mission but I would have given only 3 if I knew you were going to slack off. Complete your mission before your time expires or I will happily add another name to the list of traitors against Dahlia."

I could here the light amusement in his voice, as if he was holding in a laugh. Wouldn't he just love to remove the thorn in his flesh.

"Yes sir, I understand."

With that he signed off but not without informing me that he will call in again to check my progress. So much for the 'report back to base when you can' part of his speech when he dropped me off at the border.

I flopped back onto the bed and sighed. I have barely moved the whole day but for some reason I can still feel sleep nagging at me. I looked at the clock and saw that it was only a little past 6. There was no way I could let sleep overtake me now. Going to sleep at 6 meant waking up at 2, yeah no thanks. I need to find something to do for a couple hours.

I got dressed in a pair of mahogany sweats that clung to my calves with a plain black T-shirt. After sliding on some black sneakers I headed out the inn and into the streets of Ava.
