Not looking at where I’m going, I feel something crash into my leg. I turn my attention away from my iPod, looking down at the object now on the ground; a second later I hear crying.
I kneel down beside the child, “I’m so sorry, sweetie. Are you alright?” The little girl shakes her head, and I fish through my pockets, pulling out a fairy sticker; I love stickers.
“Sweetie, would you like this sticker?” I show it to her, and she stares at it for a while before nodding and smiling. I take it off the wrapper, sticking it to her shirt. She still has tears running down her cheeks, her nose a bit snuffly.
A male voice booms out, getting closer, “Oi, what do you think you’re doing to my daughter?” He sounded quite angry and I look up at his face.
“I’m not doing anything, I accidentally ran into her and she fell, and to stop her from crying I gave her a sticker...” I try to explain, before being interrupted.
“Skye, are you alright?” The cute male knelt down beside me, picking up the girl and hugging her tightly to his chest, “The mean lady didn’t hurt you, did she?” I just try to ignore what he just said, looking at the beautiful little girl; I can understand why he called her Skye, her eyes are such a bright blue.
Standing up, I look down at the male, “Well, once again, I’m really sorry. Now, I need to get home and start making dinner.”
“So, you’re making dinner for your family?” The male stood up, holding the girl up and resting her on his hip, his arms around her so she wouldn’t fall. I shake my head, laughing.
“Nah, I got kicked out when I was sixteen, I live alone.” I smile, because, well, living alone isn’t that bad.
The really cute guy shook his head, “You’re not going home; you’re going to stay at my place until Skye stops crying. She’s already making a scene. You need to compensate.” I nod in defeat and the child wriggles from the male’s arms and latches onto me.
I try to balance her on my hip, looking over at her dad. “Uhmm, what should I do...?”
He just laughs at me, “Well, she’s taken a liking to her, probably because you’ve bribed her with fairies. So, you’ll follow me home. You need to come this way.” He grabs my free hand, the one I’m not hanging onto Skye with, and starts leading me to his place.
“Would your girlfriend or wife get angry at you, bringing another girl home?” I ask, staring up at his bright blue eyes; I guess I now know where she got her eyes from.
“Oh, nah. I don’t have a girlfriend, my ex dumped our baby on me and she went off to fool around with other guys.” He slightly laughs, gently squeezing my hand. He leads me down some roads, ending up outside an apartment building block.
He smiles over at Skye who’s still in my arms, “Sweetie, we’re home, you can stop crying now.” She rubs her eyes, crying louder. He just sighs and walks into the building, leading me to the elevator and going up to the seventh floor. He smiles as the doors open, showing me to a door, he unlocks it and shoves me inside.
“You can make us all dinner once we calm Skye down, alright?” He smiled, shutting the door behind him. He pointed to another room, “Go in there, all her toys are in there.” I nod and walk into the room, looking around the pale pink room. I gaze at the little mushroom stools and the fairies painted on the walls, I scan my eyes over a photo of the male and some other girl, then another photo of him and Skye as a baby. I smile as Skye tugs on my arm, I look down at her with tiny tears in my eyes.
She pouted, staring up at me with her blue orbs, “Why are you crying?”
“It’s nothing, I just have sore eyes.” I smiled down at her, feeling bad for lying to her. I sat down next to her dolls, picking one up; she sat down next to me, looking at me.
“What’s your name?” She asked, smiling at me, wiping her tears.
I looked down at her, “Aldea, but you can call me Dea.”
She giggled, “DeeDee.” I smiled down at her and we played with some dolls for a while. I hear a shuffle at the door and I look up, a grin on my face.
