I reached the principal's office in a matter of seconds. My feet ached and I was out of breath. Outside of the principal's office, there were two seats for students that were sent without notice or parents ready to pick up students who have gotten into trouble. The door was shut, the blinds were shut, and there was no sign of anyone inside anywhere. The small open spaces the blinds exposed wasn't enough for me to see anybody, but it was enough for me to notice there was no light inside. I had no idea what I was doing, but my nervous system told me to. I knocked on the door without hesitation, loudly.
It didn't surprise me there was silence. I waited, then gave up because there was no answer. I sat down on the chair that was next to the door, throwing my head back. I dug my head in my hands, feeling terrible for slapping myself in the bathroom. Now Harry was in trouble. Tears started forming in my eyes at the thought of Harry getting suspended or leaving the school. What would his parents say? When they found out and asked Harry what happened, would he blame me?
Just when I was going to bang my head on the wall, the door swung open. My heart leaped out of my chest as I stumbled out of the chair.
"Ms. Hazel!" The principal said with a cheery smile. I nodded, looking down at the floor. I traced my foot in a circle, waiting for something to happen, but nothing did. Mr. McKinley, the principal, kept smiling and smiling from ear to ear. I couldn't help but smile back. Looking at the white tiled floor, helped me think. I felt like principal McKinley was waiting for one of us to crack, which is what I was thinking too. But too bad I'm not going to be the one to crack first.
"Ah, well, since you won't tell me what you're here for, then I hope you don't mind me asking what you need?" He smirked, tapping his index finger on the golden doorknob. The door was wide open, but since I was on the side, I couldn't see anything but half of his desk and some paintings on the walls.
"Mr. McKinley, I just wanted to--" I paused. Could I make up an excuse? Or should I tell him what I was really here for? "I wanted to have a little chat with you for a moment."
He smiled at my comment, making the wrinkles by his eyes show up in an instant. He signaled me to come in, and so I did. I was about to gasp when I saw no one was inside. I held my breath, quietly making my way towards a black leather chair in front of his desk. I exhaled when I made myself comfortable in the soft material. Mr. McKinley took a seat at his desk, moving a pen to his side. He folded his hands together as I examined his office. There were a bunch of famous portraits and paintings on the wall, two bookshelves on each side of the room, with a file cabinet near the door. His desk was wide, filled with papers, pens, and a few desk toys.
"So Hazel, what did you need to tell me? I'm all ears," He stated, still smiling. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down at how I was going to say this.
"Well, I don't know if you've heard, but-" As I was about to say what had happened with Harry, the door was opened and a lot of light was let in. My body shook with fear, but I didn't know why. I was just so afraid of life at the moment that everything scared me. I sunk in my seat, not wanting to be seen by whoever had entered.
A loud voice filled the room, saying, "Mr. McKinley! I have a very disappointing story. Styles was found in the girls' restroom a few minutes ago!" The voice sounded a lot like Mr. Connor's. That scared me more. "I took a while to bring him here because I was giving him a little lecture, wasn't I Styles?"
"Well," Mr. McKinley stated firmly. "Mr. Styles I suggest you have a seat." No no no! I thought to myself. My heart thumped inside my chest even though I was a bit happy I was about to meet my superhero. Footsteps were heard coming towards the chair next to me. I wanted to disappear right then and there. I closed my eyes, completely shut. All I saw was pitch black and I wanted to keep it that way. No matter who was about to sit next to me, I didn't want to see them. I didn't want to see principal McKinley. I didn't want to see anything.
