One day the girl was walking down the street when she saw it.
The bouquet of roses in the windowsill and the textured perfection that were its petals. There were some in every color, blossomed and dried to dust, the leaves crumpling under the pottery and falling out of the open window. She wondered why the windows were open in the shop, it was a cold evening and there was a light frost covering the glass objects in the car mirrors throughout the city. Her silent and kind acknowledgment was interrupted when a young man a little bit older than her emerged from the shop on the phone and bumped into her, spilling coffee on her wind-sealed jacket.
Jerking backwards in shock the man looked at the small girl who stood there, her cheeks red with embarrassment. "Shit, I'm so sorry, oh crap let me get you a napkin." He took a step forward and reached into his pocket, pulling out the white squares of paper and handed a few to her, watching her slow and unfocused movements in an attempt to clean herself. She moved like her body and her mind were two different parts and elsewhere, parts of her head lost in her own world of shame and personal matters all the while her body reluctant to even cooperate with her need to clean herself up.
"I'll buy you another one." He stared at the girl, maybe an inch shorter than him. It was then that he got an instant reaction from her that he had been anticipating for a bit due to the awkwardness of the silence, watching her hazel eyes look up into his.
Shit, he hadn't even gotten to actually look at this girl. Her hair was long and curled, not a touch of product or heat needed to let it fall perfectly on her shoulders, shoulders that showed that she was physically fit. Her posture was delicate and made her seem unrealistically fragile, for she flinched when he looked at her, his eyes wandering her features. Dark circles formed under her eyes, and her lips were pink from the chilly weather, her hands continuing to fumble with her sweater as she stared at him.
Her reaction was simple, she shook her head in a slow manner, innocence radiating off of the small curves of her lips. Confused, the man stuffed his hands in his pockets, his head tilting slightly as he studied her expression.
"You're not very talkative, are you?" He blinked, sincere eyes watching hers carefully.
She shrugged, smiling again and looked down at her feet, her gaze returning to his, only to find him still staring at her intently.
"Well listen here lady, I believe in being a gentleman and having some respect for a woman, so if you would do me the honor of sharing a coffee with me, I'd be thankful."
Instantly her face lit up, her hand bolting upwards to cover her smile as she broke into the sweetest laughter that that man had ever heard ring in his ears, causing him to frown.
"What?" He slouched, looking down at his shoes than back at her, his head tilted to the side.
Immediately the girl stopped laughing and looked at his face, shaking her head and smiling as she nodded to him, pointing behind him down the street at the small convenience store. She looked up at him reassuringly, taking note of his piercing navy blue eyes and sighed, humming to herself as she listened to the Christmas music.
The man shrugged, turning to his side and pointing his arms in the direction of the shop.
"After you, little lady," he flashed a toothy smile, the girl's face burning as she skipped a step to walk ahead, listening to his footsteps not that far behind her.
--
Upon arriving at the shop, they sat at a table by the window and away from the door, both of them with their hands wrapped around a hot cup of coffee. The aromas filled the room and an earthy, homey smell filled the air, soft music playing in the background. Lights were dimmed due to the time to set the mood of exhaustion, which frankly had a large effect on the man. The young woman on the other hand, was wide awake and as expected, silent, which was starting to aggravate the curious young man.
Sitting up, he placed the cup by his welcoming lips, tipping it back slowly and studying her face, putting it down again and spinning his finger on the table.
"So what's your name little lady?"
She blinked, forcing the words out of her mouth as if it was a burden.
"Anna."
"And do you know who I am?" He continued, his head cocked to the side in a playful fashion.
"A stranger who is treating me to a coffee." Brown eyes exchanged with his own blue eyes quickly, locked away unknown emotions concealed within them and her longing to know his identity kindling within her breast.
"I'm Cody, it's nice to meet you little la- I mean Anna."
"Nice to meet you too, Cody." A quick quiet settled over them as a smirk found its way on her face. She rose from her seat, proceeding to leave the small piece of paper which had been concealed within the sleeve of her coat by his coffee, leaning on the table in a sultry manner, her back slightly positioned away from him.
"And I'm not that little." She let the words roll off her tongue, walking out into her own little world to do what she pleased.
The sudden change of reactions and the mood changing set Cody back a bit, but all the while he couldn't help admitting she was alluring and absolutely..
Innocent.. All at the same time.
The self questioning Cody had undergone within the few minutes she had left him there had ceased to exist when he looked at the paper once more, carefully turning it over to reveal the true meaning behind her tempting attitude.
She had given him her number.
