No child should ever have to suffer. The words of my mothers voice echoed through my head every time I stepped foot in Encino's Children's Hospital. Seeing all the kids: Some with no hair, others slowly losing there's, some too sick to even know exactly what was going on. Looking at this day by day touched apart of my heart that made tears escape from my eyes. Me, being the sensitive soul that I was couldn't do anything but help them.
Everyday after work I would go straight there and help the nurses and doctors with these little angels. I would read to them, play piano for them, I would do anything I could to keep their minds off of their worry's and let little smile spread across their angelic faces. My mom always taught me to help people, and I love what I did. There was nothing compared to the feeling of seeing them smile and laugh. It was so heart warming.
I had promised myself I wouldn't become too attached to these wonderful children. It would be too hard for me of things went bad for them and the Lord called them home with him. It wasn't easy though, they all were so wonderful so sweet. Amazing personalities that shined throw their little eyes. I was able to restrain myself from doing that for while.
All that had changed when I was introduced to Savannah Jones, a leukemia patient who was eight years old. She hadn 't been sick long when I came to know her. She was the prettiest thing that I had ever seen, Her hair was sand brown and straight with bangs that cover her fore head, She had grey eyes and soft caramel skin. She always smiled despite how sick she was. For an eight year old she always had some kind of word of wisdom, almost as if she had been living longer than I had, I was only twenty five years old. Only seventeen years younger than I. She had became one of my best friends.
Unfortunately she didn't have enough time left, according to Dr. Jones. Her foster parents couldn't afford the treatment that she needed and neither could I. She had some many things that she wanted to do with her life and she wasn't ready to go yet. I wasn't ready for her to go neither.
I was headed towards her room when Dr. Jones walked out of her room along with the nurse and my friend Natasha. I could tell by looks on their faces that something was wrong "What's going on?" I asked as I walked up to them. The sound of my heels clicking fading into the sound of the machines that was coming from the rooms.
Dr. Jones turned to me with sigh. He was an older man with graying hair and soft wrinkles forming around his and his lips. "She's taking a turn for the worst,"He said." The white blood cells are increasing at a massive rate, it would take a lot of chemotherapy and treatment to slow it down or possibly stop it."
"Okay..." I said as if I was comprehending exactly what he was saying. "Why can't you put her through more treatment?"
His face grew ashen." You know that her parents can't afford the treatment, Anna. Its best that you just enjoy her while you can." He started to walk away bit I followed.
"That girl does not deserve to die, Dr. Jones. Why can't you just make a loan or something?"
"You know I can't do that, Ms. Walker. This is a hospital, not a bank."
"But you're suppose to save the lives of these children, not let them die."
"That girl is not any different all the other ones that we have lost, there is noting I can do about it."
I could feel the frustration rushing through my body. I tried to fight by back the tears as they stung my eyes." But-"
He stopped in tracks and turned to me with eyes slightly irritated, he almost looked as if he wanted to hit me or possibly curse me out. "How about you pay for her treatment, Ms. Walker."
