I walked across my study room carrying a large book in my arms. I could hear the click of my heels as they hit the polished wooden floors. Sitting down in my chair, I set the book on the desk in front of me and submerged myself in reading.
I heard footsteps down the hall and I lifted my gaze to see Sebastian standing in the doorway."Your afternoon tea, young lord," Sebastian declared in his deep voice. A smile played at his lips, as if he was happy to see me. I only nodded in reply. He served me some tea and turned to me with an inquiring glance.
"Our guests arrive at six o'clock. I would like to know if there is anything you would prefer I serve for diner tonight?" I heard him say.
"Serve whatever you consider best, Sebastian," I looked my butler in the eyes. Into his deadly bright red eyes. The smirk on his face did not waver and he raised an eyebrow.
"I trust your reasoning, young master. I will do my best to pleasantly surprise you," Sebastian bowed low and taking the tray he strode out of the room, his smooth motions making no sound. I stared absently into the empty space he left behind. How could he be so submissive? So obedient? So perfect? I never understood.
While reaching for some sweets, I spilled hot tea onto myself. I flinched as the water burned my skin. I was about to call out, Sebastian, when I felt a soft cloth press againt my soiled clothes. He is perfect, I thought. But I stood up and said, "Sebastian, take care of this mess."
He escorted me to my room. There he changed me out of my wet shirt and into my garments for the evening. I wandered over to the mirror. Taking off the eyepatch I examined my purple eye underneath. It always brings back painful memories. But it brings back many tender ones as well. Ever since the day it appeared, I have never been alone. I wonder how long that will last.
I took out my pocket watch to see that it was half past six. The guests, I remembered. Leaving my room I went to the dining room. There everything was set and ready. Silverware sparkling and candles burning, but not a soul in sight. Approaching the table I noticed a note left in Sebastian's handwriting. It read:
Apologies my Lord,
Some unforseen circumstances have arisen. I will return with the guests at seven.
Sincerely yours,
Sebastian.I frowned at the paper I held. Cursing under my breath I walked back to my study. Could he be any more suspicious, my mind raged, he already has been acting strangely lately. Inviting guests I do not know, and disappearing like this does not help. I took an innocent piece of paper absently began ripping it into nothing. Sitting down at my desk I once again opened my book. I hate you, Sebastian. I hate having a late dinner.
After some reading I glanced at my pocket watch. Seven o'clock. He should be here any mome- my thoughts were cut off as the door swung open. Finnian stumbled into the room.
"They're here... " He panted, "the guests.. "
"Where is Sebastian!?" was all I could say. He simply nodded in reply. I rushed down the stairs. Attempting to stomp all my anger into the ground. I just want to know what the hell is going on, my mind was determined.
Reaching the bottom step, I saw Sebastian. In his arms he held a woman. The delicate way he held that fragile creature made me sure she was of importance. They were both soaking wet because of the pouring rain outside. Sebastian let her stand, although I doubted she would be able to walk. The lady was insanely pale, but she managed a curtsy and a smile.
"I thought you said there would be guests, Sebastian. I only see one," my mocking voice seemed to speak on its own. But gazing into the demons eyes I felt a melancholy note.
"Look closely, my Lord," was all he answered. The lady stepping forward put her hand onto her stomach. Only then I noticed the large bump on the woman's abdomen. She was with child.
