Tears welled up in Violet's eyes as she trailed behind Daryl, with his back to her. Her vision got foggy, making her trip over roots and crush every twig under her feet.
"You know, part of hunting is sneaking up on the animal, so they don't see you coming. We can't really do that with you dragging your feet through the woods." Daryl commented, still with his back to her.
"Sorry." She mumbled.
Her tone of voice was different than Daryl had heard before. He turned around to look at her, seeing tears littering her cheeks.
"Awh c'mon, there's no cryin' on hunting trips." Daryl chided.
Violet threw her arms up in defense and said, "I'm sorry, I can't really control it right now. It's not like I normally do this."
"What's the matter?" Daryl asked after a long pause.
"I don't want to talk about it." She said as she wiped some of the tears off her cheeks.
"Well ain't gonna move forward till you stop crying. It scares off the animals." He interjected.
"That's kinda of a shitty thing to say to someone who's crying." Violet quipped.
"It's the truth. What my Daddy told me, and his Daddy told him and so on. One damn thing he ever taught me." He muttered the last few words to himself.
This small piece of personal information intrigued Violet, and she made a mental note of it, too caught up in her own mental crisis to be digging into Daryl's.
"You really wanna know why I'm so upset?" She asked him.
He raised his eyebrows and looked at her in response. She took that as a yes.
"I was gathering berries because it was something to do, and I heard something so I went to investigate. When I find the source of the sound, it's none other than Shane and Lori, fucking in the forest."
"Fucking in the forest." Daryl repeated.
"It's not funny. My Dad's barely in the grave, and my step mom decides her rebound is going to be his fucking best friend. It's sick." She spat out.
"Maybe it's just a physical thing. People've got needs." He suggested.
"God, now you're sounding like your brother." She remarked.
Daryl raised an eyebrow at her and gave her a look that told her he knew what has gone down between her and Merle.
Although her cheeks were a blotchy red from crying, they turned a deep crimson after the look Daryl gave her.
"I'm just going to go crawl under a rock and die." Violet spoke, veering off the trail she and Daryl were on.
"Cheer up, sunshine." He said, gently pulling her back in the right direction.
