Flaws

At what age did we begin thinking
That it is okay to beat ourselves down
Like our own worst enemy -
Our demons inside of our soul fighting for dominance?
Did we just wake up one day with the thought of self hatred
Engraved into our heart like names carved on the tree in our backyard?
When did it ever become okay and acceptable to pick apart our body's flaws
Like a subconscious habit of biting our nails as we read a book?
The very same body that nourishes our body and keeps our heart beating!
Can you tell me how it is okay to hate ourselves with such a passion?
A passion that can never be shadowed over by another
Because that hatred, that passion, had grown so strong
It had learned to fend off all other passions.
We don't take compliments and shrug them off as white lies
As we silently compliment another person who fights that very same demon.
Because how can anyone ever love anything about us
If we can't even love ourselves?
We forget all the ways we look at others and see their beauty,
Whether it be from the glimmer in their eye as they recall a happy memory
Or the way their eyes crinkle when they laugh out loud as they read.
Those small things that make them unique and beautiful that you notice -
Others notice small things of you that make you unique and beautiful.
So, tell me

When did it ever become okay and acceptable to pick apart our body's flaws?
