I am the new girl. New to town, new to school.
Cats High School has roughly about 2000 students and I am now number two-thousand-and-one, with two and a half years to go.
The worst things about being the "new girl" are the stares. You get them everywhere you go. And then there are the head-turns and the talking starts.
"Who is she?", "What is she doing here?"
Then there are the pretty girls. "Eww, what the hell is she wearing??", "Look at her belly! Looks like she's pregnant!" Giggles.
The first day of school settles everything. Once you slip in one category you stay there. Glasses - geek. Big thighs and hips - fat girl. The first impression counts and that's the sad thing!
They don't know about my talents and they also don't know about my personality. My only chance to survive this is to walk proudly, hope for the best and show them who I really am. So I go.
I open the front doors and immediately am greeted with stares. Great. Just walk Abby, I tell myself. Just one more turn to the left and I can enter the office. I slip in and smile at the secretary.
"Can I help you?" she asks.
"Uhm yes... I'm new to the school and this is my first day. My dad and I moved here just a few weeks ago."
"Oh, then you must be Abby!" her eyes spark with pleasure.
"Yes Ma'am, I am."

Surprisingly, the first day was okay, I'd never imagined that I would make friends this fast! In my old school I was the Geek. My first impression on the people never wore off and I was afraid it would be the same here!
On the first day at my own school I wore my glasses and in class I raised my hand when I knew the answer. Apparently this gives you the image of uncool and thus I never got the chance to "step up" because they didn't know me.
Today in society we have so many prejudices. And we use them combined with impressions new people have on us. We categorise them and rarely give them a chance to work against the prejudice we lay on them. And even if they take a given chance, we ofter don't want to see the results of it and still leave them in their catergory.
In the job, in school and in the new roup we just joined. We live in an age of first impressions.
