Prologue
The knife glinted in the starlight. It was clean, not bloodied yet. Yet.
The hooded man held it. He crept through the city, soundless, and ready to be merciless – his presence in the city must not be known. The organisation of which he was a part was secretive, known to none except their own members, and they planned to keep it that way. And so the hooded man had been ordered to eliminate any witnesses.
These precautions might have seemed a bit extreme for a simple recon mission. But the organisation’s true goal was too important to be jeopardised just because the hooded man didn’t take every little detail into account.
“That’s the address,” the second hooded man told him. His hood bounced as he nodded at the building in front of them.
The first hooded man motioned for his partner to follow, then crept around the side of the building. He gestured around the yard with two fingers, ordering his partner to follow his part of the plan, to stake out their territory. They would be here for a while.
A small voice came from inside the building, and the hooded man’s keen ears picked up footsteps, coming towards them. He spun and leaped into a nearby bush, his partner doing the same, just as the wire door into the house swung open.
From his vantage point in the bushes, the hooded man watched as a young boy stepped out of the house. He was laughing at something, but didn’t look around when he came outside. Shutting the door behind him, he pulled something out of his pocket. A pokéball. He casually slung it into the air, watching as it popped open, spewing red light onto the ground. A creature materialized in front of him. A Rhyhorn, bigger than the boy. It grunted happily when it saw the kid, who laughed, patting the Pokémon on the nose.
“The Prophesied One,” breathed the second hooded man from right next to the first.
The first nodded. “The Prophesied One still lives.”
The hooded men watched from the shadows for the rest of the night and well into the next day before heading off to report to their superiors. The first hooded man was relieved. The reconnaissance was a success.
And the Prophesied One still lived.
