"I miss my sunshine."

It had rained for a few weeks, constantly, everyday. The sun hadn't shown itself and Nathan Smith was cooped up in his home with nothing but ramen noodles and his MacBook. He didn't have friends who wanted to come over and didn't have enough room in his studio apartment for a pet other than his gray mouse One.

The tiny creature was currently in his sweatshirt pocket, snuggled into the black fabric and breathing inaudibly. Nathan had his legs over one side of his armchair, his arms and head over the other and his torso was actually in the chair. It wasn't the most comfortable thing, but he didn't want to disturb One's nap.

He didn't have a television. Not only did he not have anywhere to put it, but he couldn't afford one. So he had a radio constantly set on a radio station with old songs, filling him with so much aesthetic pleasure he could sit in this position for hours. Which he did, on most occasions. However, there were times when One would be in his own little room (a two foot by two foot shelf six inches above the ground, with white picket fences surrounding *just* tall enough so he couldn't crawl out. He had a food and water dish, toys, and a pole in the center that connected to the ceiling. The ceiling was white and from it hung a bed/swing Nathan had made from his boyfriend's old hoodie pocket, stitching it into a pouch and attaching two black strings to it. One would get in it and either sleep or just hang out) and Nathan would have time to write on his MacBook.

Being a freelance novelist living in a studio apartment made Nathan the most boring and unoriginal person in LA. Actually, that probably wasn't true. What other - out of the literal thousands of ones like him - novelist had a mouse for a best friend? One was a great companion, and very well trained. He went out of the house with Nathan sometimes, even, sitting up on his shoulder when he went to Starbucks. People hated One and made snarky comments about him, all except for the children who met him. Kids loved One and One loved kids.

Speaking of the little guy, it was time Nathan got back to work on his novel. Or, what he hoped would become a novel. He reached into his hoodie pocket and pulled out One, getting up and placing him into his 'room'. One didn't complain, just let out a small squeak and hopped into his bed, causing it to swing back and forth in a motion that must've been soothing to him.

Nathan sat back down in his chair, opening his laptop and going into Microsoft Word. Ten thousand words later and he was still on chapter three, describing a character of his. The main character, one he found himself falling in love with.

Matthew was a beautiful man, everyone around him knew this. He had brown eyes that anyone with a soul fell in love with, and hair so soft you didn't want to do anything but pet it. Fortunately he liked this, he liked snuggling and curling up with his significant others on rainy days. However, this was getting harder to do. It was still raining, it had been raining for many years but he didn't have anyone to cuddle with. He didn't have anyone to love.

Not since him.

Not since he lost his sunshine.

Nathan closed his laptop soon after opening it, the lack of sound surrounding him making him confused. The pitter patter of rain was no longer there. However, the emptiness soon disappeared as a knock on the door entered his ears. He got up quickly, stepping a few feet before opening the door.

A small man, completely dry of the rain Nathan thought was still pouring stood in his way. Nathan looked around, confused at how sunny it was. It was as if it never rained. His attention turned back to the man and his eyes widened.

"Sunshine," he whispered.

"I'm sorry I left," the man wrapped his arms around Nathan, pulling him closer.

"It's okay, sunshine. Please don't leave again."

"I won't, Nathan. I love you."

It never rained. He just lost sunshine.

His sunshine.
