A/N: The pic up there is her majesty, Veronica.
I slammed the heavy cafeteria door behind me. As soon as I had left the classroom, I had made a run for it. The principal must've seen me on the cameras, because I heard an announcement come on over the intercom minutes after I had left the classroom.
Amber Delainey, please report back to room 116, Amber Delainey, please report back to room 116.
I snuck out the cafeteria, and a good thing, too, because as soon as I rounded the corner of the school, I saw half of the administration standing around the front of the school saying things into their walkie-talkies.
Amber Delainey, yes. No, this is the first incident. Alright, thanks.
Brown hair, bright green eyes, yes. Okay, thank you.
They were trying to find me. They had probably called the police department, along with some other people. Seeing if I went that way I would be stopped by angry administrators, I went around the back of the school. Behind the school was a road, a soccer field, and the dumpster. I quickly ran behind the dumpster, and waited for a minute or two before the back door of the school opened. I heard light footsteps, and I heard the most annoying voice in the world, except now, there was a slightly sinister tone to it.
"Amber, darling!" Veronica cawed, "Why don't you come out and play?"
Something stopped me from crawling out from my hiding spot and and punching her in the nose, although I'm not entirely sure what.
"I know you're here," Suddenly, there was the silhouette of the dumpster on the gravel, and I heard a small explosion, "I guess I'll just have to chase you out!"
I risked a peek from the corner of the dumpster. I gasped. The school was on fire. I jumped up from my hiding place, which I realized immediately as a huge mistake. Veronica's cold blue eyes glinted with glee, and she had a wicked smile on her face. There was something different about her face, contorted in anger and she looked as if she had gone mad.
"Why don't we play a game?" she laughed hysterically, and a ball of fire appeared in her hand, "Dodgeball?"
I knew I had to do something, somehow save the kids and teachers inside the school, but it was as if Veronica was aiming a pistol at me, I just couldn't move. I was frozen in fear. Veronica thrust out her hand, and a beam of red-hot fire was shot at my chest. I jumped out of the way, just soon enough to miss it. However, that didn't stop my jacket from catching, and it burned.
"Why don't you come with me?" Veronica started to walk over to me, and I fell to the ground. I could feel the flames on my jacket burning me, and it was all I could do to stop from passing out.
Suddenly, another figure appeared in front of me, silhouetted against the flames. I could tell it was another girl my age, but I couldn't tell who. She waved her hand, and Veronica ran away. She turned around, and I blacked out.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I felt a burning pain in my chest. Underneath me was a cold, hard surface. I took in a breath of chilly air, and slowly sat up. I was still dizzy, and carefully took in my surroundings. I was back in the forest, resting on a rock. I had no memory of coming here, just of the person who had saved me from-
Veronica. That must've been a nightmare, a hallucination, something other than what I had seen. Not only was it completely impossible, but I refused to believe that Addi would abandon me. I must've fallen asleep here on my way to school when I was walking through this part of the forest. Only, I didn't remember coming to this part of the forest. A small river cut through the trees here, a different one than the one I had crossed earlier.
I stood up, only to be frightened enough to fall back on the rock in surprise. A small, meek voice said, "Oh, hello."
I looked up. There was a girl I recognized as Adalene Aberdon, a freshman, just like me, that went to my school. She was sitting in a tree, about thirty feet off the ground.
"Adalene?" I asked, "How did you get here?"
"I walked," she replied, her unnerving purple eyes glinting. Adalene was strange, she had deep purple eyes that when she looked at you, they looked like they were staring into the depths of your soul, and her hair was midnight-black, making those creepy eyes pop out even more. She almost reminded me of a raven, except for the fact that she was a human being.
She gracefully leapt to the ground, from tree branch to tree branch, until she stood no farther than a few feet away from me. "How do you feel?" she asked, tilting her head.
"I feel fine," I answered. I stood up, and immediately was pulled to the ground by the weakness in my muscles. My chest was on fire.
"The burns?" she continued to inquire, "Here, let me see." She placed her hand on my chest, and almost immediately, I felt infinitely better.
"How?" I asked.
"Magic," she answered simply, "But we have to move. Veronica could show up at any moment, and, quite frankly, neither of us are ready for that."
"Why are we running from Veroinca?" I asked, still convinced that it had all been a dream.
"Follow me," Adalene ran off into the woods.
"Wait!" I yelled, running to catch up.
Adalene was fast, faster than I ever remembered her being in P.E. She gracefully leapt over logs and skirted around trees. She was almost too fast to keep up with, but I somehow ran fast enough. My feet almost left the ground, I was running so fast. She suddenly stopped, right where the forest ended, and I could see the school. Well, I used to be able to see the school. Now, I saw smoke, fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, and a horde of petrified kids.
"That's why we're running from Veronica," she said. I realized that none of it had been a dream, and I also realized that I didn't see Addi in that horde of kids.
I turned to Adalene, "Addi?"
She shook her head, "She got burned really badly, they took her to the hospital. She'll be fine, but she'll be in there for a while."
I looked down, "Alright," I said, "Let's go," I turned around and started walking. Adalene must've known I needed thinking time, because she didn't say a word for a while. I actually didn't hear her make a sound, which was surprising, because there were dry leaves all over the ground. As I was walking through the forest, I heard birds, leaves rustling in the wind, and the occasional fox. I also had a lot of time to think. I thought about what happened today, what it meant, and what it had to do with what had happened 7 years ago.
Suddenly, I whirled around, turning to face Adalene, "What does all this mean?" I asked her.
"It's magic," she replied, "There's certain people-"
"That's not what I meant," I growled, "That was pretty easy to figure out. I meant about what happened 7 years ago. What does all this have to do with my dad?"
"Sit down," Adalene waved her hand, and two smooth rocks grew out of the ground, "This might take a while."
