I ran as fast as I could through the forest. I held a small, woven basket in my hands, with perhaps the most precious bundle inside in all of history. This child could change the world. If I could only deliver it.
I ran faster, using magic to avoid obstacles. The child in this basket could not arrive harmed. I stopped, I sensed something was wrong. I could feel eyes poring into my back, watching me, analyzing my every move.
Something wrong? a voice spoke in my mind, You seem... Tense.
Run! yelled another voice desperately, She has to make it here!
I can't! I thought back, they have me surrounded! Help!
I can't, you know that, the voice kept on, You have to handle this on your own. I have two other daughters to take care of. I can't let anything happen to them.
But Anastasia! I thought. I could just faintly hear the growls of excitement around me.
They won't harm her, the voice said, Just get yourself out of there.
Alright, I trust you, I thought, laying down the package very carefully on the ground. I will come back for you, Anastasia, I whispered to the child, I promise.
And as a flood of guilt washed over me, I thought, Even if it's the last thing I do.
And then I left her there.
