Prologue

“I’ll make this perfect again.” He said earnestly taking her face in his hands.

“No.” She said smacking his hands away from her.

“Yes, I promi –“

“No.” She interrupted. “That’s not what I mean. I want you out, gone. This is over.” Tears rose to her eyes as the reality of her words struck her. He looked as stricken as she felt but she didn’t care. She bit her lip to hold back a terrible choking sob as she whispered, “I thought you said you were going to stop.”

“You don’t understand.”

“Don’t.” She warned, her voice suddenly low.

“I had to.” He said. He opened his mouth to explain further, he was finally about to give her the explanation he’d always wanted to share. The secret wasn’t worth keeping anymore, if he lost her he didn’t care what else happened, but then she interrupted again.

“That’s what you always say.” She cried, finally breaking down in front of him. “What you’re doing is a crime!”

“I can explain.” He said trying to keep calm as he reached for her hand. Part of him knew this was real, she was actually breaking up with him and there was nothing he could do about it, but he couldn’t accept that. He wouldn’t accept it.

She backed away from him, angry now. “NO! I don’t want your explanations any more. You’ve had two years to explain, I’m done now! It doesn't even matter anymore! Just...” She stopped to catch her breath. She bit back everything she wanted to say as she reached an inner numbness. Calmly she told him, “Just go.”

She turned her back and wiped her eyes. He stood there for a moment, taking in the shakes of her thin body as she cried. He wanted to wrap his arms around her and take the pain away, her sadness was more upsetting to him than her anger. He couldn’t do that though. Instead he did the only thing that left him with a chance, he walked away from the woman he loved.
