Chapter Two

By the time the police had come Birgit had left the door slightly ajar, so she wouldn’t have to let the police in herself, and she’d sat down on the couch. The remains of her coffee table, and her dead boyfriend, had laid between herself and the police when they’d come in.

She put on her brave face, and though her face was tear streaked she’d refused to cry in front of them. All they’d seen was a woman pulling shards of glass out of her knees and feet while she described in a shaky voice what she’d found this morning.

She’d sat there, chewing at the inside of her cheek, while they took photos of the crime scene and interrogated her. She’d heard them for an hour or so questioning the landlord and her neighbours about the incident. She finally began to cry again once they were gone and the door closed behind them, along with Ray’s body...Ray’s corpse.

It had been three hours since she’d found out her lover had been brutally murdered and she felt more alone than she ever had. There was a hole inside her being that had begun growing two years ago. She knew that Ray was the only one but Hunter who could fill that whole, and now Ray was dead. Ray was gone, gone forever, and she couldn’t allow herself to see Hunter ever again even if she'd known how to find him. I’m all alone... I’ll never be happy again. She thought with despair.

She momentarily considered going to the bathroom and spilling her blood into the porcelain sink. Dying no longer seemed so horrible. In fact, it was easier to die. If you were a good person, or tried your best to be, you would move on to a better place. All you had to do was let go and you’d be in a place of perfection, you would be reunited with so many loved ones you’d lost that by the time you realized you’d left others behind they’d have joined you in heaven... or wherever you found yourself.

It was living that was hard. You remained in a world corrupted by greed, lust, and evil. You had to live in a horrible world knowing what happens and having no power to stop it. Having disturbing realizations of all the pain and torment your loved ones went through before they died. You don’t move on; you’re abandoned.

I could be with him again, though... It wouldn’t even hurt for long. Birgit thought, tempted to hasten her life's journey. It’s not like it isn’t going to happen anyways. I’ve been coughing up blood for two weeks now, I can’t have much time left anyways.

She rose and was about to go to the washroom to proceed with her plans when there was a knock at the apartment door. Confused, she rerouted and opened the door to two familiar looking men in police uniforms. Neither had been amongst the police who’d shown up earlier that day. Where did she know them from?

“Hello ma’am.” One of the officers said with a tip of his hat. He was tall, unusually tall. “May we come in and ask you some questions about what happened earlier?”

She looked from the tall officer to the shorter dark skinned one who was trying poorly to look sympathetic. “Sure.” She backed up opening the door wider, gesturing for them to come in. She looked back at the blood soaked carpet behind her. “Can I offer you anything, officers? Some coffee perhaps?” She offered, trying her best to sound like suicide hadn't just been on her mind.

The tall officer stepped into the apartment and looked like he was going to say something when the shorter cop nudged him roughly in the ribs. “No, thank you ma’am. We’re here on business.”

“Of course.” Birgit said suspiciously. “But you see, I don’t understand. The police were just here to question me a couple of hours ago.”

Fear seemed to flicker in the tall man’s eyes when his partner said, “Yes, we’re aware. It’s standard for two teams to question witnesses to assure validity and the absence of bias.” The fear left the tall man’s eyes, and a tight smile took its place on his lips.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize.” Birgit muttered, dipping her head to try to keep the suspicion from her voice. “I’d be glad to answer any questions you have Officer...?”

“Williams.” Said the tall man.

“Drake.” The shorter man replied shortly. He was trying to be friendly, Birgit noted, but he just wanted out of there.

“Officers Drake and Williams.”

The two officers went over the same questions the police had earlier, like they’d said they would. However Birgit was still suspicious. This was not the first time she'd had to deal with police – she'd gotten lots of experience with them thanks to Hunter's old habits – and she'd never been questioned twice. Especially not twice within the same day.

She was glad to see the officers leave but she didn't feel safe in her apartment any more, she felt watched and vulnerable. So she did the first thing that came to mind, she called her mom.
