  Tick.

  Tock.

  Tick.

  Tock.

The clock in my apartment seemed to be ticking obnoxiously loud tonight. Not only that, but the traffic that usually sounded so distant sounded like it was running underneath my bed. The green neon sign flashing outside my window felt like it was doing considerable damage to my eyes.

Why did everything have to feel so amplified tonight?

I reached for my glasses and sat up to check the time for what felt like the hundredth time that night.

  4:28am.

I sighed and flopped back down onto the bed, hastily removing my glasses. I had been tossing and turning for hours, at this point, and I just couldn't seem to relax enough to actually feel tired. At this rate, I would never get any sleep.

And, of course, he wasn't helping.

The voice in my head, the figment of my imagination, the more aggressive version of myself... Whatever I called him, he was always there. Always taunting me, berating me, telling me what I could do better.

Now that I thought about it, when had he first shown up in my life? It seems like he had always been there, in one way or another. When I was a child, he was merely a voice in my head when the world was at its quietest. As I grew older, however, he began appearing to me.

It scared me at first, to see myself, a better looking version of myself, standing somewhere else in the room. I soon grew used to him, though, and what a nuisance he could be.

  Like now.

  "You look tired."

I fought the urge to roll my eyes.

I looked over to my side and there he was, laying beside me with an arrogant smile, as always. I looked away and rolled onto my side, away from him.

"Maybe that's because someone is keeping me up," I grumbled.

"Sheesh," I flinched when he appeared right in front of me, kneeling on the floor beside the bed. "You sure get cranky when you haven't had your sleep."

"No, I only get cranky when you're the one who's keeping me up."

  "Ouch. That stings."

I turned away from him once more, but he wouldn't be ignored, as usual. Why was he so active tonight?

"You know, it's rude to turn away from someone when they're talking to you."

  "I don't care."

In an effort to block out his voice, I threw my pillow over my head. It worked to some degree. He was still talking, but now it was muffled enough that I could finally relax. I closed my eyes and just when I was almost asleep...

My alarm went off.

I let out a frustrated groan and threw my pillow off my head, desperate to stop the shrill beeping. He was standing at the foot of my bed with his arms crossed over his chest. He looked far too smug for my liking.

"Morning, sleepyhead."

"Go away," I mumbled as I grabbed my glasses and sat up.

Looks like I'll be going to work without any sleep. Again.
