AUNIKA

"But mom!" I complained as my mother dragged me out of bed by my arms. "It's not fair, I don't want to go!" I kicked and rebeled but in the end my mother had won. I was no match for a woman that was over a thousand years old.

My mother took me into the bathroom, turned on the cold water in the shower and held me up by my wrists to the water, pajamas and all. I squirmed and tried to get away from the freezing water. Screaming as the cold water hit my skin, I'm not a big fan of anything cold. After twenty excruciating minutes of being forcefully showered in frigid water and then having my teeth involuntarily brushed, my mother carried me by my pajama's collar into my room. "Get dressed, you're going to school, like it or not."

I stripped out of my soaking wet pajamas and wrapped myself in a towel as I looked through my luggage, I was too lazy to put my stuff in the closet yesterday so I just left my bag where it was. Rummaging through the mess of clothes I eventually decided on some ripped up white skinny jeans, an Evanescence T-shirt and a plain black hooded sweatshirt. I didn't have anyone to impress, no need to dress my best. After drying my hair and changing into the clothes I walked over to the mirror in front of my closet and stared at myself. I sighed as I thought about what to do with my hair. I never really did anything to it anyway so I left it as it was. My hair was naturally straight so I didn't worry much about it but something was bothering me. Eventually I pulled a grey knit cap onto my head and felt better.

As I headed downstairs I noticed my father had already left and that my mother was getting ready to leave herself. "Aunika dear, I heated up some blood for you, I know you don't like it cold, hurry up so that I can get you to school." Yawning, I located the ziplock bag of blood on the kitchen counter. Putting one of the bottom corners in my mouth I forced the liquid through the plastic, breaking it, and into my mouth. I grimaced as I finished. Squirrel, gross.

I bet you must be wondering why we haven't attacked some random civilian and drained them dry. Well, most vampires, like my family, feed on animals. You see, in order for vampires to live amongst humans, we can't be discovered.
Unfortunately some vampires can't help themselves and feed on humans. Thankfully humans are stupid and believe all of our stories. Who do you think first came up with the idea of a chupacabra? Blood sucking dog thing, my ass.

Here's how the story goes. Shepard who's a vampire gets hungry and feeds on his livestock, when they're all dead his human friend comes over to console him and ends up becoming lunch. Shepard blames the neighbor's dog but the dog is paralyzed so the humans assume it was a dog-like creature that did the crimes. The sightings in other places are just excuses for others that couldn't control themselves. Simple as that.

Back to the real world, I've been dragged into the Mini Cooper by my mother and driven to school. The fact that it was cold in autumn here in New York drove me insane as my mom pulled up to my new high school. I stared at the entrance, the other kids were already piling in. I sorta wished I wasn't an only child, because right now, half of me didn't want to go in alone. "Aunika Keira Alphonse!" My mother yelled. Apparently she had called me more than once because she didn't usually use my full name when addressing me. "Yeah, yeah," I grumbled getting out of the car, dragging the backpack my mother had bought for me along. "Remember, main office, name, please and thank you, then you should get your schedule! Have a nice day at school sweetie!" My mother called after me as I trudged up the first set of stairs and onto the grass. We'll see how good a day it'll be.

I made my way into the school and as stopped by a tiny old lady at the front desk. "I have't seen you around here before, how may I help you?" I looked down at the woman and smiled. "I bet you haven't, I'm new and looking for the main office." The old woman adjusted her round glasses and pointed to her left. See that room there, that's the main office." I followed her finger and nodded. "Thank you very much!" As I walked past the nice old lady my smile disappeared. Old people always made me smile, but I never smiled for long.
