"Are those wings? I don't think so I'm not wearing them."

"Obviously they are wings how else are you supposed to be a fairy." Sabrina replied, "now turn around so I can pin it to your costume." She waved her finger in a circular motion as if I had forgotten how to turn.

I didn't blame Sabrina for being frustrated with me. Since we had started getting ready it had been one argument after another ranging from "you should have glitter and cool designs on your face" to "you should wear thigh highs and a garter belt." Each argument seeming more difficult to win. Three hours later I was finally in my costume, that had been laced up so tight I thought I had broken a rib in the process and I, to Sabrina's great displeasure, was NOT wearing thigh highs or a garter belt.

My make-up had been artfully done courtesy of Sabrina. The outer edges of my eyes and crease had been darkened with a purple so dark it was nearly black, and the lid had a bountiful application of silver shimmer that managed not to fall everywhere. Sabrina had lined my waterline with black eyeliner, then proceeded to smudge, and later made a wickedly sharp wing above my lashes before applying a generous amount of mascara. She even managed to carve out my face, with her contour kit, to make it more exotic looking. After finishing the look with a burgundy lip color Sabrina decided I didn't look enough like a "fairy". Which led to her winning the argument of glitter and designs on my face. My face had swirling lines, vines, leaves, and flowers flowing down my cheekbones in beautiful detailed designs that left me staring at myself in amazement.

I wanted to argue with Sabrina and complain about the heavy makeup or the length of the dress, but I couldn't. Sabrina had practically used blood, sweat, and tears (not all of those belonging to her) in order to get me looking fabulous. Finally, prying myself away from the mirror and my thoughts, I turned towards Sabrina.

I could see in her eyes she was mentally preparing for my complaints, her eyes already willing to show sadness and hurt. "I.." I couldn't tell her that I felt it was too much. I sighed in defeat, "I think I look lovely. Thank you!" I went over to Sabrina and gave her an appreciative hug.

She was stiff at first as if unsure whether she could trust my words. "Are you sure you're okay with everything? No complaints?" She pulled back and held me at an arm's length, all the while examining my face. I nodded and smiled at her. "Okay... Great! In that case I brought the perfect set of heels for you to wear." Sabrina started out slowly, but easily gained speed and crashed through my resolution of not arguing when she pulled out a pair of black suede heels.

Everything that Sabrina had brought was gorgeous and the shoes were no exception. The heels' laced up with silk ribbon (I was sensing a theme) that looked like it would tie all the way up to my calf. "Are those safe to wear? They're really high, like twist my ankle and break my neck high." I examined the heels uneasily.

"It'll be fine. Probably." Sabrina stated in the exact opposite of reassurance. "Plus, you might trip and fall into the arms of your Prince Charming." She smiled mischievously, "or would that be your Peter Pan?"

I reached out and shoved Sabrina in annoyance. "If you keep this up I won't go with you anymore." I stated in a pseudo-serious voice. Sabrina could tell I was bluffing but humored me.

"Oh no! Please don't abandon me. I'll be ravished alone at the dance!" Sabrina threw her hand to her forehead as she put on her dramatic display. "How will I make it out of the dance with my virtue still intact?" She continued in mock horror.

I couldn't fight it anymore the laughter rushed over me in silence as I tried to laugh and gasp for air at the same time. Once I had gathered enough air to respond I retorted, "First off, you have no virtue. You lost that like two years ago. Second, I know that you don't mind being ravished on your own, hell you can even multitask." I smirked at Sabrina while she busted out laughing.

"You have a point there. However, it's much easier to multitask when I have a team mate I can switch with." She winked at me while still laughing.

"You look like you're having a seizure." I stated bluntly before laughing again. A pillow came flying out of nowhere and smacked me right in the face.

"Stop laughing! That is my sexy face. Boys are known to crawl on their knees when I give them that wink." Sabrina finished with a smirk on her face and began laughing again. "anyways enough stalling we need to leave already." She said as she dragged me to the front door.

"Wait! Don't we have to wait for Mark to get here?" I desperately tried to feed Sabrina an excuse in an effort to stall. I really didn't want to go to the dance, even though Sabrina spent so much effort trying to make me look presentable.

"No, we are meeting him there. Now-" She gave a tug on my arm. I grabbed the door frame.

She put both hands on my arm and gave a strong tug when she saw me clinging to the door frame. "Let's-"

My iron grip lost to Sabrina's stubborn grasp when she lifted her foot and planted it on the door frame for leverage. "Goooo!!!!!!!!!!!"

We tumbled out of the doorframe in a free fall that seemed to end in death. Well not in death, but in a tangle of limbs that would certainly end in a twisted ankle.

It was then I noticed that the way Sabrina would fall aligned her head directly with the cement steps of my porch. She would hit her head at a dangerous angle that would very likely kill her.

In that moment of realization my heart froze, time seemed to stand still, as I searched for a way to keep a tragedy from happening. Then all at once Sabrina seemed to become lighter, adrenaline coursed through my body, and I twisted our bodies around in a single sweep of movement. After twisting us around I grounded my feet and braced for the impact of Sabrina's momentum.

She hit the center of my body with an "oomf" and I struggled to keep my footing. I managed to keep us from toppling over, saving us both from a twisted ankle.

"Woah!" Sabrina exclaimed, "How'd you do that? One second you were falling on top of me and the next you were behind me catching me! That was so cool. Are you sure you're not Supergirl or something?"

"No I'm not Supergirl. It was just adrenaline." I rolled my eyes at Sabrina's preposterous statement. "But I do feel like I'm going to be the White Rabbit."

Sabrina just tilted her head in confusion. "What do you mean, you're dressed as a fairy."

"I'm late! I'm late!" I stated while skipping away and pretending to look at a watch.

I managed to skip, and not twist my ankle, all the way to my jeep before I heard Sabrina screech, "The dance! Oh my gosh! I completely forgot!" Sabrina hurriedly ran over to my passenger door. "Hurry and open the door! We're going to be late to our fashionably late entrance!"

I had effectively distracted Sabrina from her unknown brush with death. I still knew and I had nothing to distract me from the fact that what I did shouldn't have been possible for me. Even with adrenaline pumping through my veins I shouldn't have been able to get myself around Sabrina much less be stable enough to hold us up. That chilling fact tingled down my spine and left a cold knot in the pit of my stomach.
