We pulled up into the parking lot filled with student's cars. The lot was so full we had to circle around to find a spot. Sabrina was becoming restless next to me as I backed up into an open spot.
"I told you we were late!" Sabrina said, in a told you so tone.
"Actually I was the one who reminded you that we were late. You just kept repeating it the whole ride over as if that would make me go faster." I gave her a look from over the hood of the Jeep as I made my way over to her.
"Well you could've made that light if you had sped up."
"There was a little old lady crossing the street I would've hit her!" I stared at Sabrina with wide disbelieving eyes.
Sabrina pouted and mumbled under her breath, "She shouldn't have started crossing the street anyway." In a louder voice she continued, "If you had sped up enough you wouldn't have hit her maybe, at the most, you would've grazed her and she'd have spun." Sabrina gave me a grin over her shoulder.
I shook my head at her ridiculous theory. "In all honesty I'm surprised you haven't killed someone yet with your crazy driving."
She looked at me with wide eyes, "What makes you say that?" She then gave me a devilish smirk, "maybe I just know how to hide a body so nobody finds it." She finished her statement with a head tilt and angelic smile.
"Did you know sometimes you scare me?" I half-joked with her as we approached the school entrance.
All Sabrina did was look back and smiled at me. She turned to the ticket booth in front of her and handed our tickets to the usher who then opened the door.
When we stepped through the door we were bombarded with a cacophony of noise. The deep thrumming in my bones told me it was in fact music and not an assault intended to make us deaf. Sabrina led me farther into the gym area and walked us pass one of the speakers that the DJ was blasting music from.
I was contemplating whether I could ask if he would turn it down, when Sabrina looked at me and said, "Don't even try. He won't turn it down." Something must have shown on my face because she continued with, "Plus the students might mob you if he does."
I immediately paled at the thought of hundreds of angry students trying to hassle me. I simply nodded and did my best to adjust to the music.
Sabrina had been searching the crowd and apparently found what she was looking for because she immediately straightened and waved her hands above her head.
"Hey Mark we are over here!" Sabrina shouted while I caught sight of Mark.
He came striding over using his huge frame to make students clear a path. He arrived in front of us wearing what looked to be a gladiator costume. He had a leather top that was cut short so his abs showed at the bottom. He had on a pair of cut offs that looked painted on. I squinted to make sure that they weren't actually painted, since knowing Mark there was a high possibility they were. The pants hung so low on his hips, his prominent v- line and happy trailed laid bare and teased the eyes.
I forced my eyes upward toward his face hoping he didn't notice my momentary fascination with his clothing. I met his eyes and saw a twinkle of mischief. He had noticed.
"See something you like?" Mark said, running his hand down the length of his body and swaying in a vaguely obscene and dancelike motion. My eyes followed his movement until his words registered.
Suddenly it was much easier to keep eye contact. Strength of will and embarrassment will do that sometimes. They can make even the most outrageous of situations bearable. I focused on the features of his face until my face lost its redness and the smile faded off Mark's face when he realized I wasn't going to rise to the bait.
