Chapter 5: Hatari

The car pulls up to the curb. My bodyguards step out and form a protective circle around me. I step out onto the asphalt. The watuwautaribu rise out of their tents. I prepare myself. "Kuendelea."

As we step forward, the chants begin. "Kufa, nyeupe farasi! Die, white rider!"

I walk past the crowds, my heart beating out of my chest. The school doors open.

I am pushed inside. The doors slam behind me.

The ua is deserted. The only sounds are the ndege crying out in the dawn. I take a step onto the grass.

It crunches under my shoes. I freeze.

Nothing. I slowly calm myself down, breathing in and out.
