"What about our date?" Asks Josh.
I close the door and sit down on the edge of the bed. I look down at my hands and see them shaking.
"Riley told me she heard you and your friends talking the other day about a bet."
He looks up at me and I can see the flecks of gold in his green eyes.
"Maya, I don't have a bet with my friends. Well not anymore at least." He says.
"What do you mean?" I ask
"A few weeks ago some guys from the soccer team started this bet." Says Josh "We were all going to find some girl and pretend as if we like her so we can prank them or something. At first I played along. I didn't see the harm. But I realised how deceitful it was so I backed out. Yesterday when Riley heard me talking to the guys it was about you. They thought I was back in on the bet and that was the reason I asked you out. I told them it wasn't."
"How do I know your telling the truth." I question him.
I can feel tears stinging the backs of my eyes, but I hold them back not wanting Josh to see me cry.
"I wouldn't do that to you Maya."
"I-I don't know Josh. You never even noticed me before I ran into you in the library. How am I supposed to trust you."
"Well if you think I would do something so childish than I guess your not the girl I thought you were."
I stand up and open the door not looking back behind me. Tears are already streaming down my face and as I close the door I can see Riley standing in the hallway. When she sees me crying she rushes over and hugs me. I start crying harder now not caring that Josh can probably hear me from his room.
"Maya what happened? Are you okay?"
"I ruined it Riley. He did nothing wrong but I still pushed him away." I say between sobs.
We walk back into her room and I lay down on the bed. Riley turns on the TV and puts the notebook on. I stop crying now aware that my eyes are all puffy from the tears.
"Hey Riles, is it okay if I go home I'm a little tired." I say.
"Sure. I'll see you tomorrow." She says and we hug goodbye.
As I walk out into the hallway and down the stairs I can hear Joshs music playing loudly from his room. I can think off nothing more I want to do than go home and lie down in my bed."
